Starring out swear words.....

So he wants it to be a place where you star out words and phrases which annoys certain people, and leave in swearwords so that anyone can see them until a mod wakes up, stars them out and then bans someone for a few days?

Yes, members will then think before they post. That in turn will make this a better place to be rather than a star fest.

That's fair enough then I guess.

:)

There should be no need to star out swear words. You shouldn't use them in the first place, if you do, expect to be suspended.

I'd love to know how he manages to trace sales of items back to the forums.

I've bought stuff because of a post by someone on the forums before, maybe a recommendation of a PSU, maybe a GFX card review. How is THAT tracked back? Where's the audit trail? Excatly, it's not possible to calculate that.

I dare say that the advertising revenue is POOR, but one can only take a guess as to how many sales are directly or indirectly generated through people reading and posting here.

If OcUK are using any kind of decent stats package for their website (I'm pretty sure they're using Google Analytics so yes they are) then it's incredibly easy to find out whom purchased what and where they came from.

With any good Analytics/Stats program you can narrow down to the landing page of the website that a person started on for that transaction, how long they spent on that page, how long was spent in the buying process and how many visits were made before a purchase was made.

If a user visited a thread on OcUK Forums about 4780 graphics cards 6 hours before purchasing one, one could assume that the money was generated from the thread (or it at least contributed to the person buying the item at OcUK).

Almost zero yes, apart from the bandwidth bill at the end of the month.

Er less of the  please.

Limited hosting is so 1990's. Unlimited hosting now costs only around £300 per year, so not expensive. No "dons" get paid either, so it's pretty darn cheap considering the business it generates.

This is the year 2008 btw.

It would depend where it's getting hosted though, if he's got his own server hosted in Telehouse or is running a leased line then you're looking a darn sight more than £300 ;)

Heck off the top of my head we've got a 2 meg leased line in one of our offices in Haverfordwest and it costs £13k a year.

I think the  is justified. OcUK hosting runs in the £10,000s per year. Spie has said many times that the forum does not generate as much revenue as it costs to run.

Wayhey someone agrees with me

What i don't understand is why the swearwords aren't just put into the filter,

Filters discriminate against people from Scunthorpe?

not sure tbh.. would seem logical I guess - if you don't want swearing on a forum then it is fairly non trivial to set up a filter - I'm also a bit baffled as to why they don't

Read the thread, there's a fair few posts that explain why they haven't been implemented :)

I can safely assure you that this forum costs far more than 300 quid a year.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Where people go on Overclockers.co.uk:

  • forums.overclockers.co.uk - 26%

That gives you an idea :)

Alexa give OcUK a traffic rank of 12,293 in the world... that's pretty darn good

And a rank of 505 in the UK
