When is OLED finally coming?

oled not as fast as plasma 0.001 on panasonic plasma's. But plasmas only big sizes but oled would blow out lcd (and quite possibly plasma)

The other problem is that OLED's dim very quickly - far too quick for use as a monitor; TV usage is generally for much fewer hours than monitor usage.

I think we should be pinning our hopes on SED now that the legal issues surrounding it seem to have been sorted out. SED is basically a flat panel that uses tiny cathode ray tubes for each pixel - so you get the response times and input lag of a CRT (very good), with the thin form factor of an LCD and (hopefully) none of the problems that plague OLED currently.

That sounds too good to be true. What sort of time frame are we looking at with that technology?

yeah what is the timeframe of the sed? I want to get a 24/26 inch, but if newer technology is coming, I want to wait.

Sick of 75hz LCDs, and I dont have the room for a CRT...

I remember reading about it and watching some videos a few months ago.

When will it come out for commercial use for pc users? 20-24inch versions would be awesome.

"OLED can have less than 0.01ms response time"

and I also read that they can go up to 240hz which would be amazing.

Has anyone heard of an official release date yet?
problem with OLED's is that the blue diodes die after about 1000 hours of use.

no point in holding off on LCDs for now, the lcd panels have to make profit to cover their setup costs (££££££££s) for each new panel iteration. Then the new tech has to be viable enough to compete with the prices of LCD (as Joe average is going to get cheapest deal unless the quality is significantly visible) so it guarantees the company make the profit on the even higher setup cost of the new tech.
OLEDs are requiring great amounts of research to iron out problems so costs are going to be astronomical, and the manufacturer has to cancel out those costs somehow.

SED looks interesting, will keep an eye out for that - only potential issue is lack of competition in manufacturing terms, so will keep prices high.

Well I wouldnt mind spending some cash for a nice screen with a small response time and 120hertz, but like you said, most people won't. even my screen which i think is nice, is way too expensive for loads of people.

And don't forget FED, a close relation to SED - different voltages hence different phosphors and different problems :(

last I read FED displays are due 2009, but who knows ? And at what cost ?

Motorola continues the *ED family with a tech. called NED, but no one talks about this any more.

Competition comes from existing Plasma and LCD tech., while both have their faults they are relatively mature technologies and most importantly for the market the price is right.

Whatever comes next I hope it comes soon. Having read about and experienced todays LCD tech. I will not willingly buy another LCD monitor or any other that fails to match the speed, colour range, easy viewing, reliability and contrast ratio of my current CRT.

LCD's backlight leaks through and liquid crystals are slow and then only IPS panel has really good viewing angles.
Plasmas again are horrible power wasters and make CRTs look energy efficient. (and have additional image retention problem)

IMO development of any other LCDs than IPS panels should be abandoned and that money directed for finalizing these better flat display technologies.

I agree with this, LCD's are bloody awful compared to a good CRT, I refuse to pay for an LCD when they have so many drawbacks. Whatever comes next I really do hope it's soon and is actually decent and not a compromise as LCD's seem to be.

Oleds are well and truely on the way.
Panasonic announced last month that they have just started building an enormous fabrication plant. (google it etc)

I believe they have sorted the blue issue, but it may be by the Sony method of using white oleds, and then using a coloured mask or over screen/filter.

Either way, we should start seeing demo units after xmas. With actual production starting at the end of 2009.

Since size was an issue, maybe they will start shipping smaller screens first.
This just might mean that we finally have something worthy of replacing the CRT monitor.
