US, August 28, 2008 - While software pirates argue that they only download videogames to test them out and have no interest in legitimately purchasing them, German developer Crytek, the makers of first-person shooter Crysis, asserted that they have data to prove otherwise. "The number of users who downloaded our patches, there were a lot more active players than there were unit sales. And I think we can safely say if they were still playing the game by the time our latest patch released, and if they were playing on a pirated copy, then they were a sale that didn't happen," Engine Business Manager Harald Seeley told Edge-Online.

Does this company do anything these days but whine about piracy? You'd think it was invented just for their game and its something they knew nothing about before starting development of crysis. Somehow now patch downloads = unauthorised copies of the game...

Also love how in the same article theyre hopping on the console bandwagon, funny how for most of the development of crysis Cevat Yerli kept blabbing about memory being a major issue and now theyre "excited" to be moving to console development...

After reformats and rebuilds i have downloaded the patch about three times. Crytek are stupid.

Fair enough, but remember that the majority of users don't know how to reformat, and don't that often get/build new computers.

The patch thing really is a doozy though, id love to ask them what knuckle dragging mouth breather compiled that data and somehow managed to convince them it was concrete proof.

Then again considering all crytek have done since the release of crysis is rag on pc gamers about piracy it probably wouldnt have taken much convincing to make the magical patch numbers seem legit.

why don't you read the interview properly first, the interviewer tries to get him to bite on the piracy thing twice before he finally just flat out asks about DRM systems

without the leading questions i'm sure he'd of never even of mentioned it

Right, just so happens every time crytek have had an opportunity to talk about anything piracy and crysis comes up. Last lot of months all theyve done is bash and threaten to stop being pc exclusive. And hre seemed very well prepared with these "facts" for someone that may not have mentioned it.

If they're bothered about piracy perhaps they should tune there games a bit more so people aren't broke from buying a £2k to play them.

You don't even know when these interviews took place. They might of all been on the same day, but sites won't all rush to publish them straight away. It's not like Crytek are releasing a statement every week about the state of PC piracy.

Rather than whinge, perhaps they should concentrate on developing something actually worth playing and not spend a year hyping it up.

who bought crysis? i dont know anybody that did thinking about it. i dont have it btw, never played the full game.

They may or most probably may not be right about the numbers, but they are right about piracy as a whole. I know its cool to hate crytek but they have a valid point and always have - they have lost serious revenue on the pc all due to piracy. they arent the only ones, far from it, but they seem to be the only ones really speaking out about it.

people slam the pc industry becuase gaming is stale, then slam the companies who speak out and tell them why its stale. damned if you do and........?

i also bought it, played it, loved it, will be buying warhead without a doubt as well. your right about how there damned if they do and damned if they don't, same goes with performance, they thought it was gonna run better, it didn't, they conceded that fact, then people suddenly started ripping crytek and calling the game 'crapsis' constantly, thinking there really original as well  they have said warhead will run better, if people complain about PC market being stale, simple solution stop being a bum and pirating games, its stealing, simple as!

People are quick to slate them for moaning but they are a business and businesses need money to survive, to put food on employees' tables. Pirates screw that all up, especially in large download volumes that would've otherwise accounted for a considerable amount in sales revenue. And you guys know it.
