Renewing your tax before the 15th September?

* £70 saving on offer
* Get six months now and re-new next March to save

Parker’s advises anyone with a band F car, who is renewing their road tax before mid-September, to tax their car for six months.

That means you’ll have to re-new your car tax by March 2009 – before next year’s higher charges come into force.

You'll be entitled to get 12 months tax for £210, rather than the new rate of £300 - and make a £70 saving.

Annoying as I've just taxed mine for a year. Anyone know if its possible to cancel the tax, get a refund, then buy a 6 month disc? Ideally without having to sorn the car and have it off the road for weeks.

I think i read that if you have a tax disc which runs over the March 09 date, they will not be offering refunds.

geat news my nubira is 183gm and is band E £170 but becomes band J £260 from April. Just bought 6 months tax on wednesday online, tt runs out end of January so I can save £90 difference in rates.

I suspect Brown and his government maybe forced into a re-think due to backbench pressure a la the 10% tax rise debacle. We will wait with baited breath.

Unfortunately mine expires in December. So I'll be buying 6 months then, SORN'ing the car in February, cashing the tax in and then retaxing it. This will save me over £200.

Thats a very nice idea, never thought about that, Mines risen to the 300 bracket from 200 but my tax runs out on the 31st march, so i might sorn it in feb also and tax it for a year.

How long does it take to sorn a car then retax it anyway?

i need to renew march 15th. is this too late and should i do the sorn thing too? lol great idea fox ;)

that is a great idea, im in the exact same pos as you :D

im still unsure if i get any cheaper tax, due to my car being lpg

What's your source for this?

It's part of the new tax legislation - no refunds on tax unless the car is declared scrapped or off the road. Previously you could send back tax without declaring it off the road. Now it needs to be SORN first.

Well I just phoned DVLA, they said I can have my car rebranded on tax band, I just need to take my logbook, mot, insurance, convertion cert to my nearest DVLA office, and they will reband the car for me.

Ah that's ok, thought it meant no refund full stop. How long will the sorn > repurchase procedure take? Can you literally sorn on one day then buy new tax the next?

I am going for the 6months option and renew for 12Month as my Car Tax is due 1st August 2008 other wise it would be £300 next March.

Question I got a reminder in the post for my car tax how soon can you apply online before I have to renew in August. I looked over the DVLA docs they sent but I just don't seem to see answer to this one.

Just checked my tax disc and it expires the end of August so that's perfect timing! Will buy 6 months this time and then 12 months at the end of February. The government can go swivel for another year :)

Cunninly my current car tax expires end of August. So I think I'll go for 6 months again, then 12 months next february! Then I won't have to pay the increased tax rate until a year next February!
