Landmark experiment to unlock secrets of Big Bang could cause end of the world, say scientists in court bid to halt it

It has cost £4.4billion and is designed to unlock the secrets of the Big Bang.

But rather than providing vital information about the beginning of life, the world's biggest experiment could cause the end of the world, say scientists.

They fear that the Large Hadron Collider - due to be switched on in nine days' time - will create a black hole that could swallow the planet.

Aren't black holes of a similar nature being created on a daily basis when cosmic rays hit the upper atmosphere anyway?

The 'scientists' involved in this bid have only proven that they know nothing of high energy physics....

There is absolutely no chance whatsoever of the LHC producing a black hole that could swallow the planet, the chance of it creating a micro-black hole is small enough, and it would quickly collapse with nothing else....

Well we're still here despite all the other particle accelerators that CERN have built so I'm not making any will quite yet.

That's not quite true. The possibility is real, if minuscule. We just don't know enough about high energy physics to be totally sure, hence why we're doing the experiment.

From what I understand of the LHC there isn't anything being created in there that isn't already occurring naturally with cosmic rays etc crashing into our atmosphere, the only difference is that with LHC we can measure and record exactly what is happening during and after the collisions.

Not this again :(

The only people who are worried about this are people who know nothing about the underlying physics and are thus completely unqualified to talk about it, let alone mandate its shut-down.

More like military want to develop more super weapons.

Yes, you're right. All of the academics and PhD physicists working on this from hundreds of countries around the world are, in fact, secretly trying to design a weapon system for the military.

The possibility of making a blackhole is something ridiculous like 1 in a trillion trillion... and even that black hole wouldn't have enough energy to exist for more than fraction a second before it collapsed... To create anything that would be sustainable would require a collider bigger than this planet.

The fact that the best scientist they can find to support this is a chemist, not a physicist, speaks volumes...

I also think there is an military involvement alongside it and will potentially provide new toys in the future. Almost everything ever built was designed for war so I wouldn't be surprised if this will be used to test and develop new weapons etc.
