Has anyone had an ATI 4870 and changed it for a GTX280? If so...how did they compare?

Cheers

Lol - I think this may be a very quiet thread..............

No sure why anyone would "upgrade" from a 4870 to a 280.

4870 to a 280 would be a big waste of time unless you game at max rez, ATI drivers are spot on for me on vista 64, i don't run any dual monitor stuff where from what i can gather the driver may cause problems.

Toxic>I bought a gtx 280 as at the time I bought a 4870 I only had a 1650x1050 monitor so it was certainly fine for those games at that res.

When I got my dell 30inch the 4870 had real difficulty running it. I was also playing grid at that time ( which makes me laugh as ocuk now bundle that game with the 4870's when their are performance issues with it and grid).

So then deciding dropping down a res to play the game was not an option as their is a decrease in clarity I got the gtx 280.

I think the move from the 4870 to a 280 might only be a marginal increase for you IIRC you use a 1920x1200 monitor???

I will hop on the 50k website later tonight to see if oyu around to discuss it further.

My experiences of the 4870 are very poor. Hot, noisy, buggy - every day it greets me with a experience I hadn't consider that could go wrong.

Get the 55nm refresh ready Nvidia - you've got a customer waiting.

Perfectly happy with my 4870 and GRID, runs fine, no card issues and drivers are stable. TBH a 30 inch display is pushing it on a 4870 and a 280. I'd say if you're running more than 24" a 4870 X2 is your best option...

To be quite honest neither the 4870, 4870x2 or a 280 is really up to the task of running a 30 incher How I would like.

Short of you going multi gpu with either the crossfire or SLI there is not one single card solution which cuts it for me.

Most people don't realise just how much of the performance drop there is going from 1920x1200>2560x1600.

Neither do I try explaining because all that gets quoted is what this review site says and this benchmark says. Only through peeps own personal experience will they truly understand.

Loadsa>sure there is no point if the OP is running at 24 inch res as the increases or not are marginal at best. But at 30 inch it really a no contest. The 4870 does match more or less the 280 at 24 inch res besides one thing. THe minimum FPS. In this sceanario the 280 edges it.

I am not ready to write my 4870 off just yet though even though it sits in it box. I am waiting for better drivers to come out and hopefully they will be mature enough to go back into my setup. The 280 is really no better driver support wise but it can fold like a whore dropping her knickers i.e fast and that's why it remains in my setup.
