V-Sync? Hmmm

Hey all,

I've just built my new PC and I'm running a Dell SP2008WFP on it. It says the optimum res is 1680x1050 @ 60Hz. Should I have V-Sync forced on through Catalyst on all my games? (I've got a 4850) The only reason I'm asking is 'cos I've only managed to install 1 game so far (F.E.A.R.) and it's got quite a bit of tearing. Then I downloaded HL2 and forced V-Sync on, and it looks quite good.

So, V-Sync.....yay, or nay?

Cheers :)

I always have Vsync on, can't stand tearing in games.

Just make sure you enable TripleBuffering as well so games that support it can use that as well.

I always prefer to have it on where possible. Though I would enable it in game before forcing in CCC, if the game supports it. After that it depends on what kind of FPS you are getting and just how bad the tearing affects the game.

Well FEAR was getting on average around 100fps with everything on 24xAA and 16xAF, so I'm guessing that when a game goes over 60fps then tearing becomes evident?

Only exception this advice I find is COH. Switching vsync on actually drops your minimum framerate quite considerably as well as capped your framerate to 60fps.

ATI even advise you to run COH with the -novsync command line (no options in the game to switch it off and the game overides your CCC panel :()

I find with everything on max and 8xaa & 16xaf my minimum framerate goes from 11 fps to over 20 fps.

However, this is the only game I am aware of where switching vsync on actually drops the minimum framerate.

All other games I play with vsync on and triple buffering to aviod the tearing.

It's just when your FPS doesn't match your monitors refresh. It happens either above or below but I would say it is more noticeable when it is below.

I have it off in COD4, seems to make the game lag awfully with it on, even with triple buffering enabled in CCC. (maybe it's not working)

UT3 I have it on though and that runs fine so it depends on the game for me.

Good article explaining it here -

Triple buffering will add more lag, not reduce it, but it can give you better lower fps when you cant keep 60fps.
Edit:Triple buffering also uses more VRam.

Triple buffering on or off COD4 is unplayable with the rig in my system with Vsync on :\

Causes terrible lag, all other cames I have tried with it on seem fine so far though..

Shouldn't do. My (PC) rig in sig plays COD4 at full everything 1440x900 res.

My old 7950GT/AMD 3800 X2 combo played COD4 at high(ish) settings.

COD4 could be run by a calculator in all honesty. Hardly the most graphically demanding of games.

It runs at 100FPS+ at 1680x1050 with 8AA and 16AF with vsync off and it's very smooth with no noticable drop in FPS.

With Vsync on it stays at a constant 60FPS but is very laggy, just something to do with the game I guess.

UT3 I have vsync on and again at the above settings it stays pretty much constant 60FPS but is very smooth with vsync on, no lag at all.

Only problem in COD4 with vsync off there is slight tearing :\

Where do I turn VSync on? I cant find it in the control panel - I get a lot of tearing in TF2, I would like to eliminate that in all games :)

Vsync - the sux0rs.

It causes input lag for me, or (more correctly) causes the video to lag behind the mouse input due to the way VSync works.

Always hated Vsync and the tearing isn't a problem (for me) except in some games (Doom3 is the only one for me).
