The next cards?

Are there any rumours on the next generation of cards yet then? I'm in the market for a new card but I'm in no real rush - if there is something good around the corner I'm content to wait.

So, any ideas? Are ATi resting on their laurels or is an imminent replacement for the 4870 about to surface? What about Nvidia?

Interesting. Sounds good. I'm loathe to go 4870 as I keep hearing people moan about drivers. My 8800GT has been a breath of fresh air. I installed it, and... it just works.

Vista and in particular 64-bit seems to be most troublesome for drivers.

Same with me but this is on ANY card (XP SP2). Nvidia and ATI have always installed without a hitch for me (even on Vista x64). My 4870 has been problem free since installing it which was also a breeze. My friend is using Vista x64, two 4870s and has no problems at all ;).

Mostly dual screens from what I've seen. I've seen one report about vsync issues (not being applied).

I'm cardless myself and in the same boat.

I will say though the 4870 is a great card and I had zero issues running 32 bit XP and Vista with all the latest service packs. There's a 1GB version of the 4870 coming out soon which might help with future games. Might be worth a look at.

You can't really go wrong with any of the cards.

4850
260
4870
280
4870X2

The 280 needs to come down to £240 and the 4870X2 to £300. Prices aren't too far out this time round thanks to ATI.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but I got my 4870 yesterday and it worked out of the box with my Vista64 and the 8.8 drivers.

Remember that people will be more vocal about having issues than not, so don't let that entirely put you off of what is a great card.

Guess what?

I installed my 4870 and it just works...

I dunno what games will use the next cards.

The current high end cards massacre anything out there and the thing is no games more intensive than the current ones are even in development yet. (Or if they are they have not even been announced)

Check out the videos for opperation flash point 2 but thats not out till next year. Looks more impressive than any game including crysis.

FWIW, I've had no problems whatsoever with Vista x64 and dual screens on either my 8800 Ultra or 280GTX. I was all set to get a 4870 until this ugly problem with Vista x64 and dual monitors reared its head. That's what pushed me to the 280.

As for cards, there are some refreshes in the offing. The GTX260 is about to get a few more shaders which might be worth waiting for if the price doesn't budge. The GTX280+ at 55nm will be around in a month or two but I suspect they'll jack the price of this one up a bit. The 4870 1GB is also imminent but doubt it'll make any difference below 2560x1600 resolution.

TBH I'd either jump now or wait a good while. I doubt we'll see the truly next generation cards until March/April next year and the rapidly changing exchange rate is making hardware more expensive by the week so I don't think the refreshes will be worth the wait as the prices will have gone up a fair bit.

ye, 4870 1gb is out soon, so is new 260,

New 260 sounds interesting. Will it offer a similar performance jump that a die shrink did on the 8800's?

btw, question for the OP, how do you have almost 70,000 posts?

By posting 30 times a day for 6 years. Average of 30-60 seconds a post and its less time a day than most of the British public spending watching 'Corrie'.

I've got a 4850 and it works just fine on linux and vista64. What monitor are you running? Do you need to splash out as much as the 4870 range?
