The next cards?

New 260 sounds interesting. Will it offer a similar performance jump that a die shrink did on the 8800's?

By posting 30 times a day for 6 years. Average of 30-60 seconds a post and its less time a day than most of the British public spending watching 'Corrie'.

Reminds me of when i was a sof 2 clan leader my post count was through the wall compared with the members.

I know they're not strictly "next" cards, but is there likely to be any more non-reference 4870s, and are they worth waiting for?

I was planning to get a normal 4870 512mb (maybe Asus), but read about all the fan issues. Then the Powercolor 4870 PCS Extreme looked great but lots of people had problems on here. Then I read about the Asus EAH4870 TOP, which still has the ref. cooler but seems better than the standard one but I can't find out when it'll be available. Also there's an Asus non-ref. 4870 shown here but again, it looks like it will be really hot because of small heatsinks or something.

Sorry if I'm over-thinking it all. Are the reference 4870s with new drivers 'ok' for noise and heat now? I should probably just go for one and forget about the rest. Don't think I'll need 1024mb for 1680x1050 resolution. Coming from an x800 XL all of these cards would be amazing.

Like when the revised GT was faster than the 'old' GTS you mean?

I mean if the new 260 is going to be faster, then a new 280 will be needed in order for people to buy one.

NV will not want two cards to close to each other in terms of performance.

As said, the card to get is the 4870 at this time based on performance for the money.

Its an easy choice.

The only way the 260 or 280 become options is when NV decide to drop the price.

I suspect any die shrink would be applied to both cards, negating this problem.

They did this time last year?

It's not an easy choice at all. If you have to buy right now it's an easy choice and the 4870 is where the smart money is but if you've got time on your side it becomes a more difficult balancing act :)

This can be said about any hardware.

Playing the waiting game in Computer hardware is foolish as there will always be newer tech on the horizon.

You could wait for the die shrunk 260 and 280 and two weeks after ATI release another card faster...and so the cycle continues.

I would buy a 4870 sell your 8800GT and enjoy some gaming.

If and when the new cards come, you have an uptodate card to sell and put towards the latest tech.

I've not seen any mention of the new gtx260 being on a die shrinked core. All they say is that it has 9 TPCs instead of 8 thus unlocking 24 more shaders. Therefore it won't compete with the gtx 280 unlike the 4870 which often beats the latter with AA applied.

Are there any rumours on the next generation of cards yet then? I'm in the market for a new card but I'm in no real rush - if there is something good around the corner I'm content to wait.

So, any ideas? Are ATi resting on their laurels or is an imminent replacement for the 4870 about to surface? What about Nvidia?

69,000 posts and you don't know?

:)

Or when ATI can't sort their drivers out for Vista x64 with multiple monitors.
Have to ask, what's wrong with ATI's drivers? I run one machine with a 4870 and another with a 3870, both running Vista 64 with dual monitors and they're flawless. I can't think of a single problem I've had.

But I'm upgrading for games not yet available. Currently my 8800GT runs everything perfectly - but I know it wont cut it this christmas.

Just wondering if there will be new cards imminent when the time comes :p

PC Format mentioned NV launching a 280 GX2 in the future but how true this is I have no idea. Some response to the 4870X2 from NV seems likely though.
