guys my ps3 has just packed up, the laser has just given up after about 5 months and its was hardly used during the week. i looked through the site to try and find out how i return it to sony but i cant find it. does anyone here know where to find the info from

Same thing happened to a mate of mine - he called Sony CS who arranged a 1 for 1 swap via courier.

yea its arranged for thursday, was doing so well at tiger 09 too.. ah well. seems to me that the 60gb versions are more reliable than the 40gb revisions i mostly read about the laser failing in forums

If its 5 months old could you not just take it back to the shop you got it from? Refund, and then buy the 80GB one?

do you have to deactivate the system when you swap out, never really understood that option, is it for your downloads?

Yes, you should de-activate it (Some ppl say Sony do it from their end, but if the console is really knacked, I dunno how).

You can have 5 systems activated with your account at one time that can all download the content you have paid for, on said account.

Yes, definitely deactivate it.

When you buy something on the PSN you are given 5 credits, every time a new system downloads it it takes a ticket, deactivating it returns the ticket. So basically, at present you have 4 tickets on your account and your PS3 has one, deactivating it will return the ticket to your account thus giving you all five again.

The ticket system will just work by a serial number style method so the tickets could be switched without ever turning on the old console. It's how Nintendo do it with their VC anyway.
