The next cards?

well they have to change core structure to make 280gx2 they have to lower from 512 bit to 256bits and do other stuff but it is possible would be some performance switch to 55 nm and 256 bit produce less heat i think

Well duh thats kinda the point :p Just wondering if there will be new cards imminent when the time comes :p

Worry about it then.

As said, the 4850 X2 is coming and depending on price should be a fantastic card for the money.

3 months is a long time in GFX cards

It all depends on the resolution you game at too. Buying a 4870 now and seeling your GT while you can still get something for it is an option. You could get £65-£70 for your 8800GT making the upgrade to 4870 only £100

Then come christmas plonk another 4870 in and cream any game release at 1900x1200 and above!

PC Format mentioned NV launching a 280 GX2 in the future but how true this is I have no idea. Some response to the 4870X2 from NV seems likely though.

They'll probably wait for the GTX260 revision and then try and fit two of them into a card.

I can't see it being possible with a GTX280, even at 55nm.

If you bought an 8800GTX at launch only now, 2 years on, would you be even thinking of an upgrade. I'd like to acheive something similar with my next card. I know that there is always something around the corner but my thinking is why buy before I need it if I can wait for that something, if there is something?

Whereas if there isn't something I may as well buy now.

This is exactly my thinking. I'm not sure anything will match the 8800GTX for longevity, especially with ATI finally becoming competitive again.

I think that 2 4850s in Crossfire currently offers the best value for money, closely followed by a single 4850.

There will always be something but I doubt we will see the longevity of the 8800GTX for quite some time.

The card that interests me is the 4850 X2 on the horizon. If this comes in at around 210-220 then it will be a dandy card to own.

If you really dont need to upgrade now then don't...upgrade when a game is released that won't run at the settings you choose.

The longer you leave it the less you get for old hardware in a few more weeks we will see 8800GT's struggling to sell for 45 on MM

4870X2 if you've got the money otherwise a single 4870 will still do very nicely. If you have a Crossfire MB then get 2X 4870's (Their slighty quicker than a single 4870X2). Either way just get a 4870 of some kind, it will last you for a long time!! 280GTX is the only other thing out right now to consider but it still costs more than ATI's offering, and is only slighty quicker in one bench maybe 2 max.

As for waiting for the next best thing, I wouldnt bother. Carpe Diem!

Is my GT even worth that now? OcUK were selling brand new GTS @ £45 the other week. I know that was a slower card but it was also a new card.

One 8800GT just went for 65 in MM few days back.

Agreed. The events leading to the longevity of the 8800gtx will probably never be repeted.

The 55nm parts for Nvidia (2**+) should clock higher, but i think it will be more like the move from the 7800 to the 7900.

But no one can tell you when or what is coming its all hype and hearsay.
Just get the best you can afford then upgrade when it wont play games how you tell it to, Just like everyone else.
