Large Hadron Collider

i think its stupied, my children are scared bye this and i am not happy about it
I'm more scared that your children are growing up with a parent that can't spell stupid.

Personally I believe that this experiment may cause an inter-dimensional rift, and unleash a slavering, gibbering horde of demons upon the world.
I hope so. I've always wanted an excuse to loot some weapons and kill some zombies.

:D

Why is it such a crime to not understand what the LHC is doing and to fear the consequences of its actions? Elitism perhaps? If you're not a physics grad you need a slap! Is that it?

It is not a crime, and this is in no way aimed at you, but people that see the headlines saying 'WERE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!!!', and then don't even bother to read down the page and understand the story make everyone really annoyed. I mean, really really really annoyed. These people are complaining that the scientists shouldn't be allowed to do this are obviously selectively reading only certain bits of new, because there are just as many headlines from real newspapers saying that nothing can actually happen.

More like annoyance at the media for sensationalising a threat that doesn't exist, and spreading fear to the masses.

Haha, that BBC commenter Na Breithne has some good responses;

'People of the world, You should understand one thing. God Created this Universe, Earth and even ouselves and I am so sure that God wont be pleasing with us, human beings, His creation to go above Him and find how the universe was formed.Think Wisely and Dont think We can go Above God.. He is the King of the world..'

King of your dreamworld, matey.

Something on such a major scale should not be allowed without being voted upon. After all they have no right to play with human life! Who on earth approved such an experiment?

Paul Thomas, Limassol

I did. And later on I'm sending a black hole in an envelope to Limassol.

Whatever you do don't the post office open it. Next week, if Limassol survives, we'll let you in on the secret of fire.

I'm loving all the comments on the BBC about how the money "wasted" on the Hadron collider could have saved all the starving people in the world...
There's no way half of the comments are real opinions, they're too ridiculous.

Reading more... I'm concerned just how much faith people have in God and religion in general. Curse the UK.

edit:
As a Christian, I believe God has sent us a message already. Have you seen four earthquakes in different parts of the world happened in one day?

Ed Li, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Such a nonsense. There are actually hundreds of earthquakes happening every single day. In my opinion every Sunday school / bible school should also include Geology lessons in their teachings.

Stephan, Germany

lol, owned.

yes...and half of the taxes wasted on general crap could have gone to saving third world countries...and the stupid amount spent on thing's like motor sports and the olympics could have gone to saving third worl countries...But nooo, they won't bring that up will they? Didn't think so, and I wonder why ;)

Some people are just sad, it's only cause this is in the limelight, people are complaining about the use of it...Little do they know theres loads of experiments going on, that we do not know about.

Laughable some people :p

How odd.

Atleast WAIT untill something starts to happen before topping yourself.

Personally i think it would be pretty cool if a blackhole happened.

Although i know it won't, but ya know :p

And so what if it did? If a black hole could be made it would be no different to the countless trillions made the whole time on the outer atmosphere. It would disappear within nanno seconds

I think it's not that black and white. There are people - not just in the UK - who don't have a Danny LaRue about this kind of thing and its implications. They will have not heard of the LHC, particle colliders, string theory or anything; they'll believe the media stories and then be overcome with fear at something they don't understand and have no hope of ever doing so.

In a more underdeveloped place such as India where the class pyramid is top heavy with the working class, there is a greater possibility that people will get scared out of their minds and kill themselves because at least then they have control. It's the age-old problem of the governments having massive power to control a Doomesday Device that will kill us all. And a lot of people will believe it because they have no other frame of reference.

It doesn't make them stupid, just uninformed. Sure, they could go on the internet and 'educate themselves' but they're far more likely to believe a newspaper which says "the end is nigh" than scores of websites which say, "this is a very promising particle collider which can help develop future technology and possibly find the Higg's Bosun". What the hell is that going to mean to them? It's just meaningless wasted words grinding literary metal. The fault lies with the media, not the people who take it in.

Or if you have no knowledge of the relevant physics you can think about it from psychological/humanitarian point of view. Why would several thousands of physicists want to come together and make a machine capable of destroying the earth? They wouldn't. Would any of the governments around the world not realise this world destroying machine was being made? They would. Would people be prepared to fund billions to physicists wanting to destroy the world? Of course not. Whatever way you look at it it's nonsense

The 2 stories i've heard about people killing themselves as they are scared of the world ending, i think it's a massive plus for the world gene pool
