Hi guys,

Am about to invest in a corded SDS Plus Hammer drill.

Two options so far, pretty sure we want to go with a 2kg one, unless someone convinces me otherwise!

Option 1:

DeWalt 240V 2kg SDS Plus Hammer Drill Powerful SDS Plus 3-function Hammer Drill for heavy duty drilling in the hardest of materials. Supplied with SDS Plus tool holder, depth stop and rubber back handle. Comes with a variety of Dewalt professional accessories.
650W
Drill, Hammer & Chisel
Variable Speed
Mechanical Safety Clutch
All-Metal Gearing
Lock-Off Switch

Option 2:

Ryobi ERH-650V 240V 2kg SDS Plus Hammer Drill Save 50% On This Ryobi 2kg SDS Plus Hammer Drill!
Comfortable overmoulded Gripzone for improved grip. Live tool indicator. Twin bubble level for accurate drilling. For screwdriving, and drilling into wood, steel and ceramics. Carry case supplied.
650W
Drill & Hammer Drill
Variable Speed
Mechanical Safety Clutch
Lock-On Switch
Soft-Grip Handle
Replaceable Carbon Brushes

Really don't know much about SDS drills, so which of these would be the best one to go for?

Thanks,

Mal

Dose the Ryobi have a Chisel function?
i have a cheap SDS drill from Focus and the chisel function is really handy for destroying stuff

Would rotary stop be useful to you?
and whats your budget

a quick google yields the Ryobi sub £100 and the DeWalt nearly £200

We're able to get the DeWalt for £90 and the Ryobi for £40.

Am not sure if it would be useful to us at the moment, but it's always nice just in case I guess!

Am willing to spend the money if it is worth it, budget is up to £100.

Thanks,

Mal

Both brands are pretty good to be honest.

Ryobi is more of a no frills budget brand but I've never had a problem with any of their stuff.

DeWalt is more up market (lol in the building world), probably a little more erganomic. Chisel function is a very handy function you shouldn't overlook. Great for cutting channels for wiring, knocking off tiles and breaking stuff :)

If you have access to Makita stuff at the same sorta price I'd go for that. Never had a problem with a Makita tool. They'll take all kindsa punishment.

Ryobi used to be good a few years back but went downhill.

Same goes for Dewalt. they were once up at the top of the game but i dont rate their newer drills.

The big jap names are my favourites, Hitachi, Bosch, Makita etc

Dewalt and ryobi arent bad.. just not what they once were.

If you want the best, get a Bosch (from their blue / pro range only)

I've got the GBH2-26DRE (230v 2kg SDS+ hammer drill) and I've abused it every single day for about 4 years and it's never grumbled. Comes with a 3 year warranty.

It's got rotary stop & hammer stop so you can use it for everything. Comes with a nice sturdy case which I've dropped from large heights and it just refuses to break.

Can be had for £100 if you look online.

The 2 you mentioned aren't as powerful, and most "proper" tradesmen use the Bosch professional range over any other brand. I've known people with Dewalt gear that aren't happy. Not too familiar with Ryobi although I believe they are more for your DIY user.

i have the ryobi one, it seems ok, i've used it to drill through brick but not much more though.

Go for pneumatic over rotary whatever your choice.
My last Wickes pneumatic has managed over 8 years of hard abuse in the trade without a hickup :)
