Is it healthy to do more then one workout in a day?

For instance, say i wake up in the morning and do 10 min on the rowing machine, starting off slow, then doing some HIIT. At the end of the 10 min im compleatly exhausted and cant realy do any other exercise at that time. Is it healthy to then do some more exercise later on in the day (some more rowing, or perhaps weight lifting), or would that not give the muscles proper time to rest, even though im not as exhausted later on in the day?

I want to try and do 30 min of rowing a day, to try and burn off some extra calories, but trying to do all that in one go is a bit to much, i simply dont have it in me to row at a slow speed with a big burst of speed every so often for 30 min.

If it is ok on the muscles to spread exercise throughout the day, with hours of non-exercise in between, would i have to stretch each time i want to exercise? or would the workout from earlier in the day have stretched my muscles enough to avoid injury with exercise later in the day?

I would say exercise, such as a row/run/swim is fine to do multiple times throughout the day. Weight training though tears the muscles, and giving them time to heal.
I bet you could probably do all over weight training, a swim and a run in one day - would take ages and would be painful the next day:p The body would need several days to repair the muscles though due to the weight training part.

If doing both weights and cardio in the same day, I would do cardio first, as after weight training giving it some on the rowing machine could do you harm. A relaxed swim is fine whenever though i think.

It's fine but you really need to consider the routine, the intensity and your ability to recover.

Olympic atheletes can train for hours a day because they don't do the negative portion of the lift and they will rarely go over a couple of reps per set.

You could do an AM/PM split, but i'd strongly avoid doing cardio on the same day, especially something like HIIT which is pretty intense and takes longer to recover from.

No reason why you cant do it if you are considerate in your routine and eat and sleep properly

I'd do a split day if I could do it - shame work takes up too much of my time for it though :(

On holidays if I am at home and not abroad (which is rare) I often do a morning workout and an afternoon workout 3x a week instead of going 4x a week. It's great for doing more isolation based exercises. You can also do all the antagonistic muscles in the "late" session which works really well for some serious development. It's hard work as you have to eat/sleep shed loads.

Hence why we have said it can be done, but you need to think about how you do it carefully, because you obviously can't train the same way you would for a typical 3 day split.

I thought it was counter productive to overtrain. Theres only so much your body will benfit.

It is. so don't over train.

Do 2 different body parts or do big compounds in morning and assistance work in the evening.
or cardio in morning and weights in evening etc

It depends on development and what your training for

Doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will burn up 3 x more fat than doing it in the afternoon/ evening. it does so because you have no food etc left over to get the energy from so has to dip into your reserves. That coupled with the fact that it will speed up your metabolism ALL day and AM cardio is the way to go.

As far a weight training/bodybuilding go I used to do a split routine.

Chest/tri's
Lat's/Bi's
Etc etc

Now you can split them further by doing chest in the am and tri's pm or if your doing cardio it might be woth doing the smaller bodypart after cardio so you still have some energy

That way you can really cane each body part because you dont need to preserve any energy for the other bodypart

However That doesnt mean you can spend an hour doing pecs in the am and an hour doing tri's in the pm
Thats Waaay too much

I have always followed the thought of If I can do a good hour workout in 30-40 mins that means my intensity is spot on and it will be a good workout.

Remember you only stimulate growth in the gym You grow whilst your resting/recovering

only if you are on sterioids...

As you use muscle it becomes damaged and dependant on your testosterone among other chemicals depends on how you feel before you can work out again...

To give yourself an example of this do a benchpress of a weight you can do 10times with difficulty... do it 3 times then don't do it again... go back to it an hour later and you won't be able to do this and will/should feel some discomfort, this is because you have trained and damaged your muscles and they have not repaired the tiny tears which will have appeared.

I have to say though i used to train multiple times in the day as its good for gaining cardio, but for muscle growth, unless you are on steroids the benefits will be very hard to achieve.

Thats my 2cents

Well, again thats debatable. Poliquin (iirc) came up with a way to train at various points of the day to gain an inch on the upper arms. this wasnt just pump gain, proper gain :]

debatable aye, definitely if you train or are sure to be able to train specific muscle groups it "should" give provable results... same muscle group multiple times will just do more harm than good imo.

I would have thought the same tbh. But you cant argue with doing bicep curls only and gaining an inch in a day!! :D

no idea if it has ever been proven to work elsewhere though (on a similar scale)

Thanks for the advice everyone. Due to muscles tearing after weight training i will stick to leaving weight training for the 2nd workout of the day, and switch arround what muscles i work out each day. And as for the first workout of the day, ill be doing rowing, which im hoping shouldnt cause a great deal of muscle tearing as its cardio which should allow me to do the evening weight training without problems.

i cant get over the fact that the op cant row for 30 minuites. I think fitness levels may need to be adressed FIRST before considering the technicalities of a split routine.

To the op, how about you stop being a girl and add time to each rowing session until you rech 30 mins straight. Do so by changing pace during the row. THEN once you hit 30mins try and get more distance in 30 mins and so on.

But yes, no reason you cant row in the AM and weight train in the PM but id be careful what muscles you train as back and biceps are heavily invlved in rowing. Oh and if you want to lose weight, look at what your putting in your mouth before looking at the exercise.

I can row for 30min if i keep a steady pace. But when i have been rowing i havnt been keeping a steady pace, after reading online it seems that its best to do bursts of full speed, with an overall shorter rowing time, which is what i have been doing.

And when i say full speed, i realy mean going as fast as i possibly can. That takes a lot out of me, there is no way i could possibly do 30 mins like that.
