*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

...and the norm for me which is quite annoying when I compare it to a £60.00 Sony Erricson on the same network with a full signal.

One thing I would say though is that my iPhone 3G shows 1 signal bar at my house, my Nokia N95 shows 4 bars of signal, yet the transfer rate is almost identical for downloading a file.

I think I've been lucky with the 3G element as I've not had any dropouts.

well I have just received my new iphone 3G. I have to say I am very impressed with the whole package and O2. Considering I only ordered the phone last night at about 6pm and it has arrived before 12 today I think that is the quickest delivery I have ever had.

Have only had a brief look at the phone but it does feel like a quality bit of kit. I will have to wait until this evening before I can start setting it up but hopefully I will be able to put it through its paces and start to see how different this phone is compared to my N95.

update:
well managed to get home at lunch and set register the unit. from just having a quick play with the phone it certainly feels heavier than my n95 but the overall build quality is great.

text seems a litle hit and miss on occasions but I guess I am being a bit too cautious with the thing as it is my first touch screen device.

Everything seems so easy to use and setting up email for exchange was a doddle much easier than mail for exchange for the N95

Hey..

So I noticed 02 are bringing out the PAYG option on the 16th September.. not bad for £349 - 8gb.

They mention:

This also includes unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for the first 12 months after you activate your iPhone 3G*.

Does this mean that I could go on the net anywhere (on 3g) unlimited, no charge?

The unlimited data was really a pleasant surprise to me. And I preemptively bought NetShare before it was disallowed from the store :D

Yet another day of iphone crappage. Tried to send an email to my boss and the thing just sits there doing its usual thing.

I sent the mail in a 3G area and was getting the lovely 'Connecting' treatment, so I left it in that state as I walked home and by then it still hadn't sent the thing. Toggling Airplane mode did sod all.

The picture shows the phone now connected to my home Wifi network and wtf is the thing doing still!? Tapping the refresh icon has no effect. God, if tomorrows firmware doesn't resolve things like this then I will speak to O2 about moving to an N96. Once all the ooh's and ahh's of the iphone fade away you're left with nothing but a crap comms device imo.

o2 have a fair usage policy that runs on all there phones, contract or P&G but for the iPhone this was waved although with iPhone P&G it may be reinstated, thats something youll have to look into.

Out of curiosity, if you put smtp.o2.co.uk into your outgoing settings and authenticate using your o2.co.uk username and password, does it then work for you? Fixed my mate's problems.

I've been thinking about getting the iphone on PAYG when it comes out next week. I've got a question for those of you who have one on contract, on the O2 website it says the PAYG phone will not have visual voicemail or call merging?

My question is what are these features, and are they something that people find useful and/or would miss if they weren't there? If they are a good thing to have, I might go for a contract phone instead.

Doubt you'd ever use call merging (on the phone, someone rings, you answer and put the other person on hold... then you have the option to merge the calls).

Visual Voicemail is quite pretty, but it's not essential. I rarely get left voicemail anyway. Google it - you might find some screenshots to better explain what it is.

No idea, I've never bothered updateding on release day before. It's just I'm going away for a few days and the additional power management (if it works) would be handy.

Just wondering if anyone had given it a shot yet.

I guess that since no one has posted anything about it, then it's not available yet.

cool :D

quick question, my iPhone is sync'd to my mac at home, but can I update the firmware at work? on a vista machine? or will that just completely miss up my phone?

Cheers
