I havent actually had anything like this happen to me yet, but I keep seeing more and more dodgy looking kids/young men hanging around. Its one of the reasons i started learning martial arts last week..

Don't be such an idiot, he did the right thing. If had run they could have given chase, caught him, then put themselves in a situation where they thought: "Right we've just had to chase him, he's obviously scared, so lets rough him up a bit". It happens. All your posts in this thread have made you look like a complete tool who thinks he's about 10x more "streetwise yo" than he really is.

People should always walk / run away, or do what makes them feel a little safer. If that means calling the police that is fine (shame we all know they probably wouldnt come until 4 days later to take a statement).

Hutch has said he is now studying martial arts to help him feel more confident, this is good as it will help him feel better in these situations. However it will also reinforce the fact that anyone could be anyone. I mean, they could be a martial arts expert to, or be carrying weapons (i imagine now many know how to use them properly) and will attempt to do damage.

I have studied a few martial arts, and obtained black belt 1st Dan, but that doesnt make me have the misconception I am super Ninja or something. Violence should always be a totally last resort, and hope you never get into a fight.

Always walk / run away, try to verbally discharge the situation. Your confidence will win you out, most thugs are just mouthy little sods.

Yeah, its one of the reasons I wanted to do it, and not because i want to give them a hiding but because although im a big guy I feel i would be intimidated and perhaps a bit scared because im not a violent/aggressive person. Like you said, the confidence boost would be nice

Comon people we need a poll who here would SERIOUSLY threaten to phone the police if some chavs were giving you hassle as you were walking home? ..I'm being serious..

Seriously if they were bugging me i'd turn round and tell em to **** off, usually they will say something back then crawl back into the hole they came from. Saying you're going to call the police would only egg them on more (imo) Best solution is just to completely ignore them they get bored very very qickly.

Though it would be highly amusing to give out a war cry then pull out a sword to see their faces. At end of the day they're scum, shrug and move on.
