Car damaged on petrol forecourt

I had my mondeo reversed into in a petorl station whilst i was paying, luckily they stopped and it all went through fine, but the petrol station was very cooperative so dont worry :)

Bit of an update:

Got A letter from the police today saying that no further action can be taken. No surprises there then. I have no idea why as it is all on CCTV as I explained to them. My advice to all involved in minor accidents is to drive away - you seem to get away with it.

They have at least provided me with the drivers name + address, and what looks like his work address which I guess is who the van was registered to. What are my options now? it has been over 1 month since this happened. I could send him a letter asking for his insurance details but would probably get ignored. I could go round to his house or the company and ask for some compensation, i can see that going badly though.

Is there not companies that do this for you? Like the personal injury ones 'If you've been involved in an accident that wasnt your fault...'

Give the details to your insurance company? Ask them to pursuee it for you?

Someone did a hit and run on your car and they have clear evidence of the car involved + who was driving. Don't accept their letter, get them on the phone and demand something more be done about it. They'll take someone to court for a few mph over the limit but not for hit and run? I'd be furious!

It does sound quite strange though, when someone did a hit and run on my car, the police tracked down the driver charged him and he lost his license eventually. The bit that made me laugh was that he denied all knowledge at first, during the accident he reversed so hard into my car that his bumper and licence plate smashed and came off + we had 4 independent witnesses to the crash yet he still thought he could get away with it.

Seems to be the case , I was knocked off my motorbike by hit and run gave the cops car registration /description of car and driver. They said the same thing

Chances are he will deny it ,I went to his house ,the police came knocking on my door the next day and threatened me with a police caution for harassment :confused

In you case I would seek legal advice as you have video footage.

Definitely follow it up. Let your insurers (or accident management company maybe), hopefully they will follow it up as you have CCTV evidence.

Maybe someone can clarify whether legal cover would be required for *** insurers to cahse the case or they would do it without.

Could be grief through his own insurance though? He will lose no claims until it's all settled... perhaps an accident management company would be better?

Same thing happened to my mum, someone parked next to her at ASDA and opened their door hard and slammed into her car (N reg Micra at the time), scratched it really bad, she was in it at the time preparing to go home! They saw her, drove off fast but she got the plate and it was on CCTV, rozzers eventually said nothing could come of it as well, prolly too busy out catching granny speeding ;)

I can't understand why the Police won't do someone for failing to stop at the scene of an accident when all the evidence is there. Do they really find it hard to figure out why so many of the public think they are useless?

Possibly target driven... that offence probably doesn't give many points towards quotas.

Go to his house?

Then when the cops come to yours deny all knowledge, he won't be able to prove it.

Either that or go and smash his van up in the dark :D

It was a hit and run. Why didn't you call the police (999) straight away? If nothing else, it constitutes suspicious activity which the public are encouraged to report. Local patrols would then have been looking out for the van.

Maybe the police would take you more seriously if you had immediately turned up at a police station with the information to make your report - instead of running off to the intarwebby.

The garage can and should give you access to the cctv tape. The only problem is that garage owners/managers/staff think otherwise :(

reporting a hit n run is a valid reason to call 999

now think about why a van driver who knew he scraped another car would drive off in that way. Chances are, he had good reason not to stay around apart from the obvious. Maybe he was uninsured, maybe no license, maybe stolen goods in the back. But maybe something more serious.

That's two reasons for calling 999 - rather than reaching for the keyboard.

Who said anything about a keyboard? Just ring your local station. It is NOT an emergency.

Maybe you should read here:
http://www.met.police.uk/999/

"999 is for use when an "immediate" response is required and should only be used in cases where a crime is happening now or if anyone is in immediate danger.

Believe it or not, out of 2.5million calls to the Metropolitan Police through the 999 system last year, only about 20 per cent required an emergency response."

I'm afraid that "Someone put a small dent in my car and I think they might be a serial killer because of that" isn't an emergency.

Indeed. Seems like a reasonable reason for calling 999 to me.
