Hi - I really only play warhammer and warcraft on my pc. Other than this I just use it to watch dvd's (hopefully bluray one day but right now mostly divx). I'm changing my monitor to the ocuk 28" one which runs at 1920x1200 natively.

I had intended to buy a 4850 gfx card however I've read a number of posts that say that at 1920x1200 you really should have an 4870x2. The price jump is massive so is it really worth it to go for the 4870x2 rather than 4850 for the games i mention?

Ah ok thats good to hear - will i have to turn down AA and stuff though?

Also is there any point in going for the 1024mb one over the 512mb one?

Thanks a lot guys - btw what is the advantage of the 1024mb model? I don't change cards that often and the price difference is not huge. If the 1024mb will give me something extra i'll buy it - but if its a waste of time let me know and ill skip it.

Its been shown that the 1GB card offers minimal benefit over the 512MB version on pretty much any res / game.

Is the 4870 still a good buy? I mean it's smack bang in the middle of the 4850 (which seems awesome value) and the 4870X2 which is awesome performance.

I had decided on the 4850 but those last two posts are making me waver a bit.

WOW is basically so old now anything plays it.

Even WOTLK with its new shadows its fine at 1920x1200 (beta versions).

Regular wow with Graphics macro to improve them, with AA, at 1920x1200 was 60 FPS on my 8800 GTS 320MB.

Now, on my 4850, I am running everything at 1920x1200 (bar crysis) with AA and more. COD 4, 1920x1200, everything on max, 4x AA, adaptive AA too, max AF... 60 FPS plus.

All the games I have played so far have had no issues at 19x12. (apart from crysis, but then again everything has trouble with that maxed currently).

Not quite, a 2.66Ghz Pentium D with a 8800GTX lags like hell in Sunwell, we're talking 7fps, with cpu at 100% load.

On the other hand a 2.66Ghz Core 2 + 7900GTX and Wow rarely drops below 40fps, and is often 100+. Wow needs a balanced machine with both CPU and GPU being "ok".

The Wrath of the Liche king shadows hit performance hard on older cards like the 7900's too.

on my 4870X2 when i play wow the second GPU doesnt even come out of 2d speed settings and only 1 gpu actually does any work.

I play at 1920x1200

A Geforce 6800 will play WoW adequately. So anything made in the last 3 years you'll be fine :)

I've been in the Warhammer closed beta, and since early access opened, graphics settigns are tweakable (somewhat). I have everything on "High", and I'm getting a little stuttering, but certainly not bad enough to put me off playing ;) Been doing a lot of PVP and when everything's going crazy, my card still does fine.

And I have a BFG 512M 8800GT OC2. Seriously, you won't have problems with any recent mid-high range card.

(but that isn't going to stop me SLi-ing it sometime soon ;) )

I would stop playing both of them ;), waste of time.
But on the graphics side, anything like 2900HD or stronger will max out wow and warhammer. Keep in mind these games engines have been coded like 7years ago, I dont think there is point getting 4850 to play these two. 4850 will handle 3 wows maxed at the same time ;].
