Somewhere in the middle.
There was a time when steam got slated left right and centre.

Yet now I dont read a bad word about it.

Anyone man enough to admit they were wrong to hate it? :)

I never hated it. I thought the concept of it was cool, then it sort of evolved from a propriety patching and verification middleman between Valve and their games to an accommodating platform that people could buy games from, and put in a pool following your user account without hassle.

They right at the time because when it was first released, steam was a bag of crap and poorly implemented. Now the issues have been ironed out and it's a pleasant experience.

Never hated it, still annoys me sometimes, other times It's superb...

If I have internet it's fine, but for me it was iffy in offline mode...

I was about to leave a similar comment on the 'crysis warhead & steam' thread. I never hated it. Most of the negative comments i remember where before it came out/ the release of HL2 and everyone was worried and well very negative.

I reinstalled it for a play of HL2 a few days ago and am very impressed with it now.

oh, I was very annoyed when i had ripped open the HL2 box and wanted to play it, and spent over an hour online with my 56k :p while it installed. and then I had to connect to the internet quickly when ever i wanted to play... god bless broadband :D

Ive alweays thought it was a good idea and program but i think its turned out a bit different than Gabe Newell originally thought. I recall one video interview he was talking about steam being able to let you play a game which wasnt fully downloaded, you could basically load up the game while dloading and play through it as it was dloading.

Don't think thats ever happened in any game so far but its easily the best online service for games there is.

Depends some games on steam have terrible support. Just go check out the Medieval Total War 2 forums on steampowered. However I have found steam to be fairly good though I don't really buy that many games on it.

I used to quite dislike steam when it first came out, it was buggy, slow and caused a lot of problems on my brothers machine.

However over the past few years they're got it pretty well polished, much more reliable and have done a lot to prove that their drm isn't too bad (largely by making it so easy to use on different machines - linking the games to an account rather than specific machine is the way to go imo).

Ive never had a single problem with Steam and the content keeps getting better. My only issue with it is that the big name titles on there like COD4 often cost more than they would in the shops, ive only used it for Valve games and a few of the cheaper original titles like Audiosurf and Peggle.

Always liked it myself. Place that keeps my serials online linked to my account so I don't have to keep putting them in. Can just leave my games to download and install them selves over night. I call that an idea.

i love it :) but find it annoying when it decides it doesnt want to work offline :( now thats annoying!

steam is awesome, and I never disliked it :)

never had any issues with offline mode.

Feel the same way.

When it first was implemented I wasn't it's biggest fan (I didn't hate it, but it was annoying... especially the friends list).

Now though it seems a pretty speedy experience. I don't buy that much stuff through it, mostly half lifes, and COD4, but each time I have it hasn't given me any issues. Even downloading the games is pretty quick.

If I could say one bad word against it, and its not really steams fault is the pricing structure of some of the games is still a little on the expensive side, compared to online stores. Not all of the time, but just on the odd occasion.

I had 56k back in 2004 when the css beta came out and the hl2 release, hated it...

"Steam servers too busy to handle your request" after hours of downloading :mad:
