everyone else seemed to say 'lin-ux' and 'a-soos'

Actually, it's mostly at the datalink layer, but does span the physical layer as well.

I work in networks, and I very rarely hear anyone say "eh-thur-net". It's always "ee-thernet" If you think about it, when people talk about radio waves and transmission, they often mention the "ee-ther"
