Cigarettes - How damaging?

I am yeah. If I was told that smoking in the way I am isn't likely to kill me faster than something else (As some articles I've had a brief flick through have suggested), it wouldn't stop me from keeping on the same line, but not increasing.

Ask any smoker how they got started and the story will be similar to yours.

Have a cigar.

Obviously the way the worked it out was by averages and sample groups so, not ery scientific.

Dash it all, I thought I'd found a way to beat the bookies. ;)

The infrequency of my smoking is based on only one group of friends smoking on nights out that I only really go out with once a fortnight to once a month, and me never having to pay for a pack myself, due to always stealing theirs. The majority of the time I'm sharing one as opposed to having a whole one myself as well.

None of my family smoke, and nobody has a smoking break at work.

Like I said it is up to you, from seeing mates who've only smoked 'socially' start smoking more heavily then I'm not altogether convinced by that line of reasoning but maybe you're an exception to disprove my experiences. I'm sure that some people can, just as some people will give up by willpower alone but it isn't everyone who can do that.

I have tried, but I quite like the feeling that cigarettes give you that cigars don't. I like the taste of cigars though.

Aye. I also feel sick if I have a particularly strong one like a Marlborough red or a Camel, or I have too many over the course of a night. I can also honestly say that in the 6 months I've been in this niche of smoking I haven't felt inclined to smoke during the week or when I'm not with this group.

Is everybody likely to be affected by the nicotine addiction regardless of the amount you consume?

I had a few on nights out and I very quickly found myself sitting at home really wanting a smoke. This was after a few weeks of social smoking, less than twice a week.

There's no point asking "Is everybody likely to get affected by it?" when you could be already under its spell.

I don't want to. :)

Then stop whining.

Surely you wouldn't want to run the risk of getting cancer at all though? It's not like you can say if I smoke x amount but no more then the odds are I won't get cancer so I won't let it bother me at all. Why run the risk at all?

That said I've been known to smoke in the past, although not cigarettes for a few years now, but it's not like I make the calculated decision to do it consistantly either.

Basicall I'm saying that if it's bothering you enough to start a thread on it you probably shouldn't be doing it at all.

Every cigarette you smoke there is a chance of cancer start. You are breathing in free radicals and lots of other carcinogens all of which could give you problems. It is is a matter of statistics as to how likely it is to happen to you.

So stop, unless you really really like smoking on that rare occasion enough to risk your life. I would rather risk my life in a more enjoyable way, sky diving etc etc.

That said though, drinking more than 2 pints of lager makes me feel really sick because it doesn't agree with me, yet I still really fancy one sometimes. There's nothing addictive about feeling sick, so maybe I just fancy from habit?

Not at all, smoking is good for you.

i had this weird disease which basically ate away at my large intestine, the doctors in hospital said "you could start smoking 10 a day and it would keep it under control"*, or get it removed

good bye intestine :o

*no i'm not kidding!

Please get off your pedistal, 1 cigarette cannot and will not give you cancer, Yes there are going to be different "boiling points" in which problems can occur but the earliest i have found is around 70K cigarettes.

Nicotene addiction creeps up on you. It finds a descrete way to establish itself in your life (like, umm - a once a fortnight smoking session ;) ) and then it sits tight and waits.

When it's ready to establish itself further - you've already been owned.

I thought about it like cigarettes had took control of a part of my brain - and I wanted that part back. Reality is that I'll never get totaly control back because even a year on I still think about smoking just for a few seconds every other day, that 1% is still there and it's wanting to snowball but I won't let it.

Basically I'm saying that if it's bothering you enough to start a thread on it you probably shouldn't be doing it at all.

I've always been someone who asks a lot of questions and confirms stuff to appease myself. I would imagine the thought of it damaging your health is something that props up in the minds of 99% of smokers, just that they put their minds at rest by making up their own excuses instead of asking other people.

Yes you are, as even if that load of tosh was true any sane person would start smoking, at least in the short term.
