Was just about to order Pure, and arcadey racing game and found out it didn't have splitscreen multiplayer.
Wipeout HD does so I'm getting that instead.

Same goes for GRID. I didn't buy that because it had no offline multiplayer.

So has lack of offline multiplayer gaming stopped any of your purchases?

Very much so, but i actually think in this 'generation' online split screen is the best thing on offer. Playing Warhawk on a decent server with your mate was fantastic... until they removed the ability to connect to ranked servers due to stat padders

I find it very sad that offline multiplayer and split-screen is dying in a lot of games... it's a sigh that in this net-obsessed world that developers are presuming that people will not be playing any of these games with friends in the same room. Some of the best gaming moments of my life were spent playing Colin McCrae, Rillcage II and of course Goldeneye/Halo co-op and 4-way multiplayer... and there were plenty more I just can't recall right now. :(

Splitsceen multiplayer is not essential for me, but I do miss it, it is just totally different racing against someone in the same room, nothing beats laughing at a mate I just pushed off the edge in Motorstorm 2 :)

Split screen online is VERY important to me, I can't believe it was removed for CoD4!

Gaming seems to be getting more anti social all the time for the more powerful consoles.

its usually not a deal breaker for me but it certainly is a missed feature. i always think "ive got no games!!" when my mates come round, unlike the n64 days where everything seemed to have split screen :o

I was a bit disappointed that GRID doesn't support offline multiplayer. :(

Still bought it though. :)

Very important, lots of great games have been merely good because of its removal (Flatout) and lots of good games have been rubbish because of its removal (Motorstorm).

I definitely think it is an important selling point still, but so is online splitscreen. I was really disappointed when I found out COD4 doesn't have online splitscreen play. I think as a student who lives with people who like playing online it is a better way of sharing the time on the Xbox, we have spent many an hour on Halo 3 online splitscreen with 4 people using it :D

Amen to that Richdog, I remember fondly many days spent playing Goldeneye and Smash Bros on the N64 with my friends, was a great social thing to do.

Id rather buy two screens, two xboxs and two copies of the game than split screen.

Split screen on anything other than a 100 inch screen sucks, fact.

Nah its not that bad, its not the same as gaming on your own but still good. I used to regularly get 15+ kills per game on Halo 3 even with a four-way splitscreen, its not that difficult to play on a split screen once you get used to it. Plus it makes you that much better at the game when you go back to playing on your own.

It really depends on the game, FPSs seem to get away with making everyone playing squint, but racing games usually get ruined as everything is so cramped. I like games where everyone plays on the same screen, N+ is a very good way of doing it, for example.
