I'm sure its probably been asked a hundred times but... heyho :D

Looking to upgrade my BFG 8800 GTX OC1. Considering either a 4870 or a GTX 260.

Which should I go for? Please give me your opinions :)

theyre about the same price (gtx may be 3-5 quid cheaper looking at the cheapest brands of each.

the 4870 is faster in nearly every game (bar crysis by 1-2 fps), the 4870 nips at the heels of the 280 ina lot of games and beats it in grid, the 4870 also handles aa a lot better than the gtx 260.

however the 260 can be overclocked more heavily than the 4870 to catch up in some games.

i got a 4870 =)

Thanks flinco.

How much of a boost can I expect (approx.) as a percentage in performance going from an 8800GTX OC1?

And whatabout fan noise levels of each of the above cards?

i have the 4870 and it is the dog nuts
i myself was um ing and r ing ati, nvidia, 280, 4870 etc etc, and the people in here made my mind up
it is a very good card

GTX260 £165, 4870 £170 and 4870 1Gb £188 gotta be the 4870 1Gb even though it's not the model with improved cooling, next step up is the new GTX260-216 but the extra money for +10% and you might as well as try sourcing a cheap GTX280 for £250

I'd def get the 4870 1Gb sub £200

The £170 quid version vs the £190 4870.
I know the 190 version has more ram (but what does that help with exactly?)

Also what other differences are there?

4870.

Equal to or better than the GTX260 both at stock and overclocked.

Opens up a good lead when AA is applied, coming close to (and beating in some cases) the GTX280.

Plus you get regular driver updates. I know this can be a sensitive subject, but I think it's certainly a plus-point for ATi.

4870 its the only single gpu card that can beat a gtx280 in some games and handles aa better than any card bar the 4870x2. This is a ati round no real need to look else where.

May I suggest doing a Google comparison of "problems with 4870" vs. "problems with GTX260" ? Benchmarks are all well and good...

4870 512MB is great for pretty much all resolutions. If playing 1900x and greater you could consider the 1GB version if its not much more than the 512MB card.

4870 for me too! runs great and if it wasnt for ati we would all be paying £350 for the gtx 280 for simular performance so i say give ati ya money! nvidia need to be brought down a peg or two!
