Nvidia Geforce 8400m gs card any good for gaming?newbie

Not really. I had an 8600M GT in my laptop and that wasnt much cop with new games. Even struggled with Half Life 2 in places.

I guess it depends on resolution..

My lappy's native res is 1280x800, and my 8600mGT has a 40% overclock.. there's pretty much only crysis that it struggles with, and even that's fine with a mix of mainstream/gamer settings.

But as for the OP.. the 8400mGS sucks at pretty much every res if you want to play something released since 1999 :)

The8400mgs is about a 6600GT right ?

Well it'll run everything to date ( except crysis perhaps ), but don't expect native res or any details, on the newer games like bioshock or others you have to expect to run 800x600 or 1024x768 and everything @ low...

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies:)

Some people are exaggerating though...

eg. ''But as for the OP.. the 8400mGS sucks at pretty much every res if you want to play something released since 1999''
is not true, my mums lappy's x1250, which is a tad worse than the 8400, runs some modern games okay ish.

Eg. FEAR 800x600 & medium runs at a playable 25 fps...

OR at absolute minimum settings:
F.E.A.R.: - GPU settings min, CPU settings min 640x480
min: 69, avg: 76, max: 83 fps

Which in all honesty, is all that matters if it's temporary, as long as it runs it's okay if you know what I mean...
Unless you play games for gfx, but then you wouldn't get a lappy with an 8400mgs...

My 8400m plays CoD4 fine at minimum settings (70fps average, 45 fps min) and plays all older games like half life 2 perfectly well.

I've seen an 8400 and an x700 side by side and the 8400 is definitely better. Perhaps it's something to do with lack of CPU overclock or you're running Vista now or something.

humm wel cant really oc as its a lappy that runs pretty warm anywho, but i used to be able to play bf2 full everything at high resolution with like 80fps, but if i do that on this one it can only play decently at 800x600 and low everything.... its sucks :( might be some power saving thing on it, but in the nvidia control i set it to non power saving and its on xp pro. might be needing windows updates but i cant get sp2 or 3 to install or update... just stops working :S

Sounds like you might have some odd Windows issues. I'd personally not spend time trying to work out what they are and just reinstall Windows from scratch.

I'd be surprised if you can't run BF2 at native res - I've seen the card running quite a few more modern/demanding games reasonably well.

Entirely depends on what you define as good.
I ran Stalker: Clear Sky on my laptop that has a 8400m gs card at low res. Seemed ok but I wasn't really expecting magic considering I only bought the laptop for the odd game.
