CD Projekt: Publishers "Scared" To Scrap DRM

COD4 & Crysis were pirated heavily so good games selling regardless is a load of rubbish (admitedly Crysis is not a great game but good gfx showcase for the PC with old school FPS gameplay).

Pirates will not be stopped unless forced to. Its human nature historically something for nothing always wins out.

The PC will continue as a gaming platform for at least a few more years but the more piracy it sees the less games you will have to choose from.

if the games would be priced better more people would buy it but now when they release some good titles like crysis warhead and none of the shops have it in stock is actualy easier to download it and crack it in 5mins and play it without any limits :) than wait for shops to get it in stock pay your money and then have all the drm thing with it :/ now it's not problem to download games coz 8mb connection is enought to get you biggest games in a day or night.....

COD4 is selling by the truckload, and Crysis sold its millionth copy not long after launch.

tbh, I've no idea what the stock situation in shops is like, but I've never had any stock issues downloading from Steam - using the same connection with which I could download the game over torrents/newsgroups. Being able to download the game when it's out of stock is a ridiculous reason to pirate.

just make the games reasonably priced and cds/dvds and nearly all piracy would halve overnight.

They are "reasonably priced". Check out the cost of the same game on consoles. There is no excuse for piracy - I know we've all done it at some point, I know I have and am ashamed of myself now :(

Steam and other similar services are the way forward, I just hope the different companies can come together so we can use one common UI. Fat chance though

They can be as reasonably priced as they like, if I don't feel like the game is one I really want and feel like paying for then I'll download it.

I just hope Steam gets more and more popular, I like buying games through that. Hoping Fallout 3 makes an appearance.

I generally pay for any game I actually like playing, do you consider "liking it" and "liking it enough to pay for it" different criteria? I'm not criticising you, just genuinely curious as to what your limits are.

How is DRM a safety blanket, it gets cracked time and time again.

It is now nothing more than a nuisance.

Yup pretty much, games that I know I will really enjoy I buy, ones that I'm not too fussed about but fancy playing I usually get off the net though.

but being a student and spend 40 quid on a game is 2 much for me :/ also some people like having a game in the box ;) there is one more reason to download games from torrents/news groups now is that you can install/change your hardware 100s of times without being woried about drm

I'll be honest, i pirated the witcher... but i'm going to be buying the enhanced edition soon.

I’ve always been very confused on peoples take on piracy. A lot of people say that they buy the game sometime later after they have played it, which, let’s assume that’s true when it probably isn’t, I don’t think that really makes it all better does it?. At the risk of sounding like those cinema adverts, it’s the equivalent of stealing a car, driving around for a few weeks, and then going back to pay for it, to my mind, if you think that’s ok, you should be willing to pay some pro-rata assessed monetary cost that represents the time your copy played was "Stolen"...

Also, sometimes people defend it by saying "I’m a student, I can’t afford it", well, like the stain son, that don’t wash either. I can’t afford a 50 inch HD TV, but I’m not going use that as an excuse to steal one?

Anyway you look at it, piracy is WRONG, and even things like the quality of the game in question, simply don’t justify it, even if it is the first thing you wished you had done as the game crashes on your for the millionth time (clear sky, looking at you ;)).

I also think, in many ways, DRM for some people is an excuse. A had a customer the other day who started moaning at me about spores drm, and every chance he got, he called it "spyware", but at one point, I stopped him and said "sir, have you actually been playing the game...problem free?" to which he could only respond, yes...so what is the problem?. Maybe I’m lucky, ouch wood vie NEVER had a piece of drm software do ANYTHING to ruin my game, and I’m rendered speechless by those who use it as a reason NOT to buy the game, as if it’s some sort of badge of honour.

I don’t know how to look at the drm argument, for the most part it helps, but some people use it as an excuse to illegally pirate the game, or simply use it too bad mouth the game whilst still playing it (Amazon), then, you have those that really think EVERYONE is out to get them, especially the big bad corporations who give them hundreds of hours of entertainment on a regular basis, but apparently have no right to protect the product, and thus, should be bad mouthed on every front.

All I know is that I buy my games and play them, nothing thus far bar the odd bug or two has stopped me doing such so for now I feel that whatever they do is fine by me.

Torrent files themselves are completely legal as all they do is index, I'm afraid that's just the way it is until they change the law. If you want them to do this then I suggest writing to your M.P.

I'm fully aware torrents are legal, I was just saying, they moan about piracy, yet do nothing to the route of the cause. And my local MP probably wouldnt even know what a torrent was. :p

what about google?

"<insert game here> torrent download", click search and you'll find it. :p

What about google? Google doesn't host the site / torrents, it merely picks up the search words "Game, Torrent, download"...then finds a site with all the relevant links.

Haha, was waiting for that comparison to arrive.

Downloading is not the same as stealing physical property.

No it doesn't, it taunts crackers/release groups into removing the DRM, look at Spore. The game got leaked a few days early and was cracked the same day, the DRM was demolished within hours and the only people suffering are the people who bought it.

Im sorry, but it is...deal with it.

Yes, of course, you can see it now...yes judge, i downloaded and cracked the game because i felt EA were challenging me, and because of my low self esteem i can only seem improve via the relative anonymity the internet provides, i decide to show them by stealing there game and making it easier to play for other thieves...

No, sorry, not an excuse.
