* personal taste not withstanding.

After some of the banter in the Travis Barker accident thread got me thinking, I thought I'd throw in a thread about every band's resident joke teller and who I personally rate as "the best drummers in the world":

In no particular order of brilliance or whatever:

Manu Katche
Stewart Copeland
Buddy Miles
Mike Portnoy
Danny Carey
Josh Freese
Vinnie Colaiuta
Terry Bozzio
Simon Phillips
Neil Peart
John Bonham **

** 3am edit: aye, Bonzo goes on the list, given that I listen to LZ a good bit as well! Lack of sleep not good....

Off the bat, that's who comes to mind immediately for me.

I'd expect people like Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo etc to end up on the lists of some poeple, likewise Travis Barker (who I really don't care for at all), but they're not all exactly to my taste.

Post away with your contributions then drumheads....

Joey Jordison is definitely on my list, probably not the best but I do enjoy watching him play. I also really enjoy watching Jason Bowld (Pitchshifter, This Is Menace) drum.

To me, the greatest players are the ones that are entirely unique and inimitable.
So, as awesome as people like Josh Freese (who is an incredible player, deserves all the credit he gets) are, I wouldn't call him one of the greats.
The ones that will be remembered for decades to come are what I'd call the greats.

My list would be something like this (in no specific order)

Vinnie Colaiuta - because his mind works like no other. Can play just about anything and make it feel good.
Sean Reinert - for being the #1 most original metal player out there. Incredible playing.
Steve Smith - because he's always doing something new. Not many people with major jazz/fusion chops would go for a gig like Journey.
John Bonham - there's not many people who could show up to a recording session completely trashed and then lay down some of the most iconic grooves ever recorded without even dropping a beat.

Joey Jordison and Lars Ulrich get honourable mentions for being entirely mediocre and still managing to make millions. :p

Just googled Sean Reinert.... seriously good drumming AND Chapman Stick on a "metal" album. Had to go and pre-order Traced On Air based on those two facts alone!

Agreed on the other two still quoted as well.

Buddy Rich, and....Buddy Rich.

I love Brann Dailor just because he's Brann Dailor and therefore awesome though.

Neil Peart gets my vote,,ok he is in my favorite band Rush but that aside he is one of the greatest drummers ever.Seeing him live with Rush is mind blowing.
A rather underestimated drummer in my opinon is Roger Taylor of Queen, also , and you may laugh but the Late Mick Tucker of Sweet was very good.

every band's resident joke teller

They must be different from your part of the world.
I've played with 100s of drummers and know 1000s of drummers and I've only known one who wasn't a miserable git.
They've usually got a chip on the shoulder because they have to watch the singers arse all night.

Anyway, my choices aren't the best in the world but drummers I absolutely love to listen to and do it for me.

Lars Ulrich (especially the new album)
Mick Tucker (The Sweet)

Lars Ulrich is a simpleton as well as one of the most obnoxious human beings I've ever seen on TV (in my opinion of course) and the new album is kack altho less so than St Anger.

Danny Carey - unmatched by any modern drummer in my opinion.
John Bonham - Legend
Joey Jordison - sensationally good metal drummer.

I would also tentatively throw Mr Dave Grohl into the mix as a session drummer.

Ginger Baker has always done it for me. I love how he incorporated his ultra jazzy style into quite heavy blues like Cream and what not. Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience was also superb in his hay day (if that's how you spell it. :p)).
