Just spent the last 4 days doing 800 miles in a Vauxhall Astra....

....more specifically an '08 1.6 Elite.

And it was really dull to drive  Not necessarily unpleasant in a sort of 'get you from A to B' sense, because it did get me from A to B, but I can't remember the last time I drove a car that completely sucked the fun out of the driving.

Steering

The worst part of this car has to be the steering. It feels so stodgy and disconnected from the wheels. You turn the steering wheel and then half a second later the wheels start turning in the direction you want. You try and turn in, then after the initial half a second of stodge, the front wheels begin to bite, and you think 'Ah!', but then the car resists and you're constantly trying to get the car to turn in the direction you want. It's like it's constantly protesting or fighting with you when you try and do anything other than slow gentle manoeuvres. The steering isn't progressive either and has inconsistent weighting.

Ride and Handling

I suspect the handling isn't too bad. It seems to cope reasonably well with a series of high speed manouevres but the steering is so bad, that you don't ever feel like you're really in control of the car. I have to admit that during the first 10 miles of driving this car, I absolutely HATED the way it drove. Over 800 miles, I ended up hating it slightly less, but does sadden me than a manufacturer can produce a £15,000 car that is so mediocre to drive. Not horrendous, but just dull and stodgy.

The current shape Civic is lightyears ahead of this car in terms of sharpness and the immediacy of its responses. With the Civic, if want to dart into a gap, it darts in. You want to do a sharp right and it does a sharp right. It's like an extension of you. The Astra is a bit like a fat woman with her arms crossed and a constant frown who refuses move despite how much you shout at her. The only way she moves is when you give her a big boot up the backside, and even then she doesn't quite end up the direction that you want her to....

Ride quality is knobbly, even with what looked to be 205/55/16s. It wasn't uncomfortable, but you definitely know whether you're on a badly surfaced road because you feel every indentation and pothole. This car also seems to have a lot of choppy vertical movement over bumps and crests for some reason.

Engine

The 1.6 engine...well its a 1.6 engine with 120bhp or so, so it's never going to set the world alight. But it's just so...'ho hum'. Some low capacity engines provide verve even if they are lower power, but this engine simply does the job of getting the car moving and nothing more. Bit throbby and uneven at idle with some vibrations going through the seat, and it even sounds a bit diesely gruff at low speed in 2nd. Strangely, it seems to even out a bit at higher revs. Not a particularly economical engine - I got 33mpg average over what was mostly motorway miles (Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle and back). Compare that to the 36mpg average of the more powerful 1.8 Civic over the same journey...

Refinement and build quality

In terms of refinement and build quality, there's a lot of noticeable wind noise around the A pillars at speed as well as tyre rumble. That drones out the engine, which is relatively quiet at speed in comparison. The lights on the radio/trip/AC/temp controls didn't work so you had to fumble for the control at night which is a bit worrying for car with 5k on the odometer. Didn't notice any squeeks or rattles though.

Overall

Overall, I'd give it 5/10. The Golf, Civic and particularly the Focus, are significantly better.

"Not particularly economical"? 33mpg from a 1.6 on the motorway is ****! :p

33mpg is probably par for the course for this type of car at 80/90mph on the motorway. It's got no 6th year, and the engine is a bit underpowered, so 5th is geared quite low (just under 4k rpm @ 80mph) just to give it some degree of acceleration above 50mph. If anyone was mad enough to spend £15k on one of these, you'd have to opt for the bigger engined car.

Whats the fasination with 6th gears, even it had one economy would be no different.

You drove a 1.6 Astra, no 1.6 is going to to be fun :p The higher range models are better such as the 1.9 CDTi 150,

Absoloutely awful.

I can pull around 50MPG in the 320 if I want to on the motorway. More realistically however It hovers around 45MPG with cruise set at 70 :cool:

It's not going to average that over a Motorway trip though, the analouge MPG guage is quite useless for measuring real economy :)

How have they managed to make such an uneconomical engine? I managed 45mpg on a motorway run (mostly cruising at 80) in my Astra 1.6 which is the previous model, not the new one! Surely that's a step backwards? Granted it has a bit less horsepower (15 or so less?) but to lose 13mpg for it is madness.

No I understand it will fluctuate rather funny watching the analouge tank when you floor it, I managed 40MPG on the way back from Leeds the other day mind :)

Really tempted to just go for a drive and see what the absoloute best I can muster out it :D

I totally agree with the OP, I had one when my car was being repaired after someone crashed into me. It was so very very dull, the wind screen wipers were very efficient though.

I forgot another point - the indicator stalks are ridiculous. They don't click into position. You nudge them and then you're supposed to tap or light touch them to cancel the indicator but you end up indicating in the opposite direction instead....

I found this too, horrible car. The seats made me uncomfortable after about 5 mins. The interior build looks disgusting too.

Good review thanks Steve Davis. Good to know it's as pants as I'd have expected! Now to practice my look of pity mixed with contempt ready for the commute tomorrow!

Ditto, I've got a Y reg saloon - 1.6 16V with 98bhp, and drove ~380 miles, brimmed the tank before and after, and I worked out about 45mpg, and this included 2 hours sat in traffic with the air con going, and the rest cruising at 70-80 indicated on the motorway. 33mpg is woeful and I would expect far better to be honest. I'd expect slightly worse perhaps as I'd guess it'll be heavier due to more safety features, but not 12mpg less.

I actually like the indicators, but then having a Zafira with the same system, I guess that's because I know how they work!

I know they are confusing at first, but once you are used to them, going back to normal mechanical stalks feels 'wrong'... the 'logic' is so easy, but just because it's different, doesn't mean it's a bad design, give it a few years, and they'll be far more widespread..

As for the rest of the car, well, since we get a lot of hire cars in work, I have found that some engine sizes/trim levels can be worlds apart to drive.. the Elite vauxhalls are 'comfort' models, deliberately soft and cosseted, get the CDTi 150 SRi, and it's much much sharper to drive, as is a 2.0 TDCi focus zetec compared to the worse car in that class I've ever driven, a 1.4 Focus LX, although I've yet to experience the 'joys' of a 1.4 Civic/Megane, but I doubt they will be any better..
