Some kind lady wrote my wifes car off this morning.

Wife isn't really bothered about flash cars so no point throwing any more than £5k at it. Needs: -

Reliable & and well or reasonably well built
Cheap to run as she's a penny pincher
Capable of cruising 20 miles of motorway a day
Not French
Not too big

Was thinking Civic, Leon or Corrolla.

Or dare I say it - a Golf?

No point in going for a Golf if the Leon is a contender. You'll get a newer, better specified Leon for the same cash.

Leon derv, job done.

You missed one, it doesn't fulfill the reliable criteria either, and tbh they arnt that well built either.

it wasnt a serious suggestion ;)

If she doesn't find it too big, then a Mazda 6 fulfills those criteria.

You won't get a decent engined Mk5 Golf for £5k. Not impossible, but it will have stratospheric mileage on it, or something odd about it at that price.

Mk4 GT Tdi would be within budget but you'd be buying a pretty old car in terms of engineering/design. Having said that I see a lot of women driving those around these days.

The leon is the best answer here really, mine (although bland) was excellent and served me very well indeed. Well enough that i bought it when its lease expired. Something like a Mondeo would be a better car on paper, but i get the impression that they arnt really what you are after.

Wow that Civic looks great for the money. I forget how old that design is now, still looks pretty fresh in my eyes. :) (Could be because the new one looks like a messed up spaceship...)
