So yeah i am wondering if this upgrade is worth it, will my fps increase in games a lot since the 8400 has 6mb cahce? Is it worth the upgrade? And before you guys tell me to overclock my current one, that aint gona happen because i am a total noob lol.

Thanks :)

Yes the E8400 would give you a performance boost, but why waste money you say you’re a total noob when it comes to overclocking. But if l can do it and l,m 53 years old you can, LOL you are not going to be out done by little old me are you. Just read up on it and there are plenty of peeps who will help you out in this forum, start here-

Reading these will give you a rough idea, so by overclocking your E4500 the money you have saved upgrade your graphic’s card instead, remember we all had to start from scratch.

I have to agree with the above post. that upgrade will improve your performance, but it depends on how much money you have really.

Learning to overclock is free and will improve your current performance, and the performance of every PC you own in the future too...

Also, if you're particularly looking to improve gaming performance, your graphics card could be upgraded, a 4850 or 4870 would be a good buy at the mo and I'd say that a 4870, and some overclocking would have a huge impact compared to just a CPU swap

Exactly.
Over clock your current CPU . The e4500 will easily do 3.0GHz possibly even on stock volts.

Oh yeah
Pedantic mode...... your sig ....Its Dual not Duel unless of course the cores are fighting :D

Get it clocked and then buy a decent graphics card with the money you would have spent. Anybody can clock. There are loads of people on here to help and it's not as if you are going to blow anything up. We all had to start somewhere.

I have a E4300 that does 3.4Ghz so the E4*** series are decent clockers.

Give it some volts and get it to 2.8-3.2. Will give you plenty of extra performance.

I wouldnt bother upgrading from that.

Unless you grab E8500 + 4GB good PC8500 + x38 + 4870 or 4850x2 it wont be worth it.

Yea - a decent overclock on that chip is very achievable. One thing - you will need a good cooler to keep heat in check (i'm assuming you are still using the stock cooler). Getting a cooler like this will keep your chip nice and cool, plus it will work on any future s1366 rig.

I have overclocked my friends e4400 up to 3.4Ghz, but that was with a TRUE cooler and it was not perfectly stable (enough to run GTA4 fine). I'd suggest aiming for 3.0GHz, past that your GPU will likely be the limiting factor.

I would do as the other guys have suggested, get a new GFX card and overclock your current processor for a nice performance boost...

Overclocking is definitely the way to go IMO..

yes the performance of the e4400 and E8400 are incredibly similar.
The Only difference in performance you will notice is the Faster Clock speeds achievable From the e8400 as well as it can Overclock further.

tbh if you are on a budget then E4400

if you got the Cash the skip the E8400 and get an E8700 on OCUK with Guarantee so that way you do not need to Overclock it as it comes at ~3.5Ghz

On what planet is almost twice the performance "incredibly similar"?

And that's before over clocking, the E8400 is easy to get the 3.5/3.6 and most will hit 4.0 with a good heatsink.

For a true performance comparison of most of Intels dual cores see my thread here.

Even though i don't know why this thread was resurrected in the first place. It was from September last year and the OP has'nt re-visted it.

What a lot of people seem to be ignoring is that he may have a board that he is unable to overclock with. So upgrading from a E4500 to a E8400 at stock should give decent improvement in performance.. ;)

I have an e4400@3,1GHz and I'm considering upgrading. I bought an HD5850 to replace my busted old gfx card and I'm now worrying about all the lost potential because of my CPU.

How much would an upgrade to e8400/8500@4GHz help my situation? I'm not really big on upgrading my mobo, cpu & memory for £350/400€ if I can regain lost potential with a second-hand sub-100€ CPU upgrade.

According to pasty's chart, a few percent,. bar Prey, where E6600 gets an anomalous boost @ 3,6GHz and e8500 stays in line.

And in my case, maybe a Q9550 or E8500 would be a waste of money when compared to the e4300 @ 3GHz.
