It most certainly does. I think it's one of those features put in there for people younger than 12 and older than 50
All you need to do is press accelerate and the auto assist does everything else in some levels.
If i had to pick fault at something in the game it would be the Auto Assist. They should devide the online races up with Assist and non assist users to create an even balance.

While i agree that it can guide you through an entire level, you have to keep in mind it is using air brakes to control their movement, not steering. Air brakes are superior at turning but cut your speed down quite a bit. Someone with auto assist turned off and a modicum of skill will beat someone that has it switched on.
It's like having traction control switched on in a car, you're less likely to die, but you won't be able to go as fast.

love Zone mode and its funky coloured tracks and the simplistic graphics, cannot get higher than level 25 atm but only had two attempts.
btw no freeze or crashs here on 60gig ps3 with 120gig HDD and over 50 friends on my list
