quick question, what's the best format to convert an mkv file into to get it working on the PS3?

Use a program called MKV2VOB. Depending on the MKV it will either repackage it as an M2TS file keeping the video/audio streams intact because they were already compliant with PS3 file protocol. This only takes a couple of minutes. Or it will transcode the file to MPEG-2 to enable correct playback. The latter takes an hour or two depending on the file.

I can only recommend MKV2VOB, and I can't recommend it highly enough

I use it for all the mkv files I get from the net.

It's never once had to transcode anything.

It just takes less than a minute to demux and remux the file.

That's it!

Output set to .mp4.

Literally just add the .mkv to it, wait 1 minute, the .mp4 comes out the other end, and plays in the PS3 perfectly.

No encoding, no loss in quality, all 5.1 sound etc retained and works via the PS3.

Perfect, quick, simple, free!

Vin.

I'd only make sure you have the current version, which I believe is 2.2.4. That's the version I have anyway

Are you playing the file on your computer or on the PS3? It may be that you don't have a Dolby Digital 5.1 codec on your computer.

Sorry to de-rail the thread but whats the best program to use for the 360?

mkv2vob?

Thanks

I'm not sure if the 360 will play AVC/H.264 with Dolby Digital 5.1 will it? No, it won't. I just looked. It only plays that format with AAC sound. I don't know if MKV2VOB re-encodes sound to that AAC format or not.

EDIT: No, MKV2VOB won't do that. If your MKV contains Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, you won't be able to play it on an Xbox 360 unless you transcode the file to WMV container. Don't know how you do that.
