Was on my bike admiring the view at a local cove on saturday ,when after about 10 mins ,I thought I could see a floating seal in the sea . Then the view approached me with very short skirt, low cut top and boyfriend to tell me it was a body .

They told me they watched the guy have some wine then went for a dip in the sea but has been floating face down for 10 mins, I suggested they call the coastguard and thought it was not worth me swimming out to him after such a long time .

Anyway I found out today the guy had a heart attack and is alive in hospital

So the moral of the story I really should have swam out to him ,also if this girl did not have such a short skirt on I would have noticed him much sooner .

The coast guards did arrive within mins and gave him cpr but he had no pulse .

But what amazed me was the 6 young people on the beach that just watched him floating face down for 10 mins

Wow thats scary.

Tough choice to make at the time, and could have cost your life so don't kick yourself about it.

Yea people can become like toddlers when they're looking at flashy sparky lights sometimes.

Only speculation of course, but the drunk bloke in the sea suddenly realised he could drown, panicked, had a heart attack out there.

I've seen this before. People can act very weirdly when someone's obviously in serious trouble. Almost as if the basic instinct is to pretend it hasn't happened...

sounds like he'll probably die though from hypoxic brain injury. quite strange he was able to be resuscitated after that long. i hope he has a donar card, might be able to help many people out.

he was lucky
wine + swiming = bad
& tbh its a very british attitude of not my problem ive seen it happen a lot
They really should teach the gd samartian in schools! (damn labour) outlawing religion

its been said before, the more people that are around the more someone waits for someone else to help, partially as people think the best person to help should do and they'll make a fool of themselves and partially because people would prefer someone else take the responsibility.

Remember he's in (probably) very/fairly cold water which slows down the body, and can to a certain degree preserve the body. you can be brought back from the brink after a couple minutes, sometimes longer, with the body cooled down massively that time is extended, not massively but a bit. Also he wasn't necessarily unable to breathe for the whole ten minutes + peoples perception of time can be way way off(even more so if they've been drinking).

Someone should have gone in though, was ridiculous, or at least called. the issue of too many people being around tends to be limited more to when theres larger groups like with the american guy hit by a car. It was ironic(and unsurprising) that in that thread people jumped on the fact that it would never happen in the UK, americans are all stupid, mean, lazy and wouldn't help and no one was remotely surprised that it happens in the states all the time.

Or picture this... you go in to help him, do so, then he later sues you because during the rescue effort you accidentally twisted his leg.

It's happened before iirc, someone had a heart attack on the street and the guy who helped her while the ambulance was on its way was later sued by her for some reason.
