Save anywhere makes the game too easy. I'm guilty of it aswell. You know that really hard bit? and you save save save save save every time you get a tiny bit further... then you'll manage to do it entirely by luck and save it, without ever workign out how you did it. I did it in Portal. There was a bit in a community map pack that i just couldnt work out... in the end i did it by accident, saved it, then jumped back down to try it again and couldnt.

Checkpoints are where it's at for me.

I would be happy with one save every five or ten minutes.

Is that not a good compromise between save anywhere, checkpoints and limited saves?

Await reply "no".

Save anywhere for me. I have about an hour to game after the kids go to bed - if I spend a half hour playing a game and then die just before a checkpoint, I generally just chuck the game and play something else.

It's an interactive story, and I just want to see the story out to its conclusion. Imagine watching a film and having to watch the same half hour over and over if you didn't pass a test every half hour.

Yeah but films don't challenge your skill, by the same token I could say that simply pressing the reload and unkill yourself button makes the whole thing shallow.

I'm not really that fussed though, it's never really been an issue.

Checkpoints, games are too easy nowadays.

There's usually little or no death penalties these days in games and that takes away from a lot of the exciting suspense/tension for me.

If I want my skill challenged I'll go online and play against real people. Offline I just want to be entertained, and replaying the same piece of game over and over isn't entertaining. Let's face it, no one really cares if you can beat Crysis on hard without saving.

Edit - I'm not against death penalties in games - ie loss of ammo or some other setback that doesn't involve reliving the last half hour of your life. Only a few games did this properly - System Shock 2 comes to mind.

I think I would have to agree with check points. F5ing and F9ing all the time kinda takes you out of the experience.

yup

i much prefer checkpoints, as long as you can go back as far as you need to..

ie if you reach a checkpoint with 1hp and no bullets, you're going to want to revert to the last one.

i can't help but F5 after every reload :S

Well I prefer a checkpoint system with the ability to quick save which can come in handy if you got to go somewhere quickly or for those extra difficult missions (I'm looking at you COD).

I save randomly, although generally not all that often. At the moment the random saves are getting on my nerves, did loads of progress on Warhead then quicksaved, turns out I pressed it JUST as I fell through the floor or something, so died everytime it loaded

Beneath the thunder level or something? Got the same problem, quit and reload, should work fine.

Personally I by far enjoy Check Points. Being able to save when ever you want is just not as fun and not as much of a challenge! The best games I've played have used Check Points Mafia, Far Cry etc, I wish more games would use them! :)

Yup, checkpoints all the way. If they are well placed and well designed then there is virtually no down side. Quick save and load can ruin pretty much any types of game.

depends on the game

rts/rpg - save any where

action/fps - limited saves

I have a friend who mashes f5 everytime he walked round a corner in half life.

Totally pointless noob.
