Hello,

Can anyone recommend some films which really show off 5.1 surround, and just in general leave you with a  on your face?

I have Saving Private Ryan, which is awesome. But I wondered if anyone else can recommend any other good films for the sound quality/experience.

If they are on Blu-Ray that is also a bonus :)

CHEERS!

Pearl Harbour is great on 5.1 I have found. Especially the scene where the japs start to fly over.

While the picture quality may not be a home run, 'Pearl Harbor' sounds absolutely fantastic. Buena Vista gives us a full-tilt uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround track in 48kHz/24-bit, and this is a true reference presentation. The film's sound design has not aged a day, and remains an utterly immersive experience.

Setting aside all the boring romantic scenes (really, who cares?), it is rare to find a soundfield as completely engaging as this. A complete, transparent 360-degree effect is created during the battle scenes. As the gunfire, explosions, screams and the blaring score filled my living room, I found it impossible to localize the vast majority of sounds, and as they panned all over the place, transparency was absolute. The track's clarity is also first-rate -- even the smallest, most random effect sounds real and natural -- from a single squeaking tire to the bravura moment where we follow a bomb dropping from plane to ground, accompanied by a dazzling array of constructed sounds.

Amid all the pyrotechnics, dialogue remains surprisingly intelligible. Not that the script deserves such attention to detail, but the mix is so well-balanced that even the biggest whoppers of action don't completely overwhelm the actors. The .1 LFE on this sucker is also among the most powerful I've ever heard. At even a decent volume level, your furniture may begin to move around by itself. 'Pearl Harbor' on Blu-ray -- if audio is your thing, accept no substitutes.

Good choice.

Is audio considerably better on Blu-Ray than on DVD? I mean i'm aware obviously blu-ray is better than DVD, but i was unsure how much of that improvement is Audio.

I think it varies from film to film. Am I right in saying that DVD's do not have HD Audio though, whilst Blu-Ray can? Or am I way off the mark on that one?

Thanks for the suggestions so far, and for that link as well :)

Hi ...

Try "Daredevil" with Ben Affleck ..

this has a awsome DTS 5.1 track that realy dosen`t let up ..

its out on DVD in 2 versions one being the Dir Cut an the other being the normal theatical cut ..

think its coming to Blu ray very soon, in the nxt month or so ...

Thanks.

I might add that a couple of films I have watched which have been really good, are Ratatouille and Ice Age 2. The sound in a couple of scenes in particular are fantastic.

In Ratatouille, near the beginning, when there is a lightning bolt, it really really scared the **** out of me. It sounded awesome, I thought I had been struck by lightning. Also in restaurant scenes, the subtle clinks of cutlery and cups in the background are great.

In Ice Age 2, the bit where those little creatures ride a massive tree trunk rolling down a hill. The thuds and the music sound incredible!

Tv adverts will have better sound quality than any film or TV programme. You can get quite nice effects from prologic during ad breaks, far more so than programmes. This is because the ads only last about 30 seconds, so they use the highest quality audio and video for them to attract your attention this is also why adverts are usually louder than TV programmes and you have to turn it down during.

ohh yeah forgot ...

get "Transformers" on Blu Ray not only is the PQ 10 times better than the DVD version, the DD5.1 track sounds amazing .. nuff said about the film thu ;)

No one's mentioned 'The Lobby Scene' in the Matrix!... and the resultant scenes 'The Lift explosion' and 'The Helicopter Crash'... all use each channel (including the Sub) to their full extent!!...

I always use it when I set up a system for a friend or family to show em what they've missed all these years with tinny 2.0 TV speakers!!..

I watched Die Hard 4.0 last night in HD and that has loads of good surround and particularly sub moments.

Also try Mission Impossible III and the afore mentioned Transfomers gets my vote too as with a good sub set up even the robots foot steps have real impact.

Not sure about tampon ads in Dolby Digital!!!

Heat - the opening scene when they do the security van, it was the first movie i watched when i got my first 5.1 setup years ago now and it put a massive grin on my silly face.....still does :p

anything in HD sounds great tbh, with half decent equipment it's a big improvement over DD/DTS.

lmao

If you've got a proper sub, try War of the Worlds. Even on lowly DVD (dunno if it's on BD yet) the initial earthquake/walker scene is superb, and the rest of the 5.1 is superbly done. Make sure you set it to the DTS rather than the DD version though, the dynamics are far better. :)
