8800GTS 640mb to a 4850 woes..!!

to the op try changing your PCI-e bus speed setting (default 100) in the BIOS - try 101 first then 99 or 105. Also on some boards if your push the either the NB or FSB voltage too far the PCI-e bus will drop back to 1x or 2x... but I can't remember the exact details.

Yeah, mine is 101, so try that :)

Ive reset the bios to default settings and still get the same result. I'm going to check the MSI website now for a bios update. I've already flashed it a couple of months ago but I'll check to see if theres a new update.

Thanks so far for all the advice guys. :D

Hey ManCuBuS, if you open CPU-z and click on the mainboard tab you can get confirmation of what your PCI-E rate is at? (just in case GPU-z is being buggy).

If both GPU-z/CPU-z are saying its x2 rate then you have a wee problem! :D

I'd be tempted to stick the other card back in too see if it suddenly corrects itself and sets x16 again . . . .

The HD4850 is faster than an 8800GT but you won't notice the speed difference until you crank the anti-aliasing right up along with the resolution!

To the OP. Did you put the card in the same slot as the previous card? Top most should be PCI-E x16. Sorry if you've already mentioned this... I quickly skimmed the thread. ;) There's not a jumper or anything on the board which you may have changed or perhaps knocked?

I've flashed the bios, re-installed the drivers numerous occasions & reseated the card its been doing my head all day.

Clutching at straws I've just changed the power lead between the PSU and card and look what happened.....

FFS...I must have damaged it when I was changing cards...

Argh...now I'll go into dingy corner somewhere and STFU for the rest of time.

Thanks for help fellas and sorry for wasting your time.

Glad you got it sorted!

I hope you are satisfied with the performance now....apply 4 or 8x AA + 16xAF and have some fun :)

Glad you sorted it mate but it's really really weird how things like that can cause a problem... they're often the last thing you would expect or check. A dodgy PSU lead causing it all? I would probably check everything else there is to check on a hardware, software and driver level before I thought of that... :D

Its quite likely the board was slightly lose in the socket and while replugging it in you pushed it back into place...

When I fitted my 260 I rebooted and my soundcard wasn't showing up at all - shutdown and pushed the soundcard a little bit and it settled slightly deeper into the socket and everything worked fine. Unlike a soundcard - a PCI-e GPU is quite capable of running on less data lanes if they aren't present.

Dunno what made me do it to be honest, I'd like to say it was good judgment or my investigative skills but I'd be telling porkies outta my bumcrack if I did.
