Right.

Firstly, lets discount price. Assume both cards are available for the same price. I appreciate that currently this is not the case, but I'm trying to find out what the options are if we are not considering value.

So, with this in mind..

Which would you chose and why - Radeon HD4870 512Mb or the Maxcore version of the BFG GTX260 896Mb, with the 216 stream processors?

The reviews show the Maxcore card as being quicker than the Radeon. But is that the story in the real world? Lets assume gaming takes place at 1680x1050.

Rroff has tried both and stated performance to be quite similar althought the ATi turned out to have some driver issues and was fairly noisy too.

I had the 216 ordered for dispatch today but on his recommendation have cancelled and will be getting the original 192sp version since the performance is only 2-3fps behind on average.

For a saving of around £35 it's probably worth it.

Why don't you just buy the Nvidia? You obviously prefer Nvidia (as you have admitted previous), previously the likes of easyrider have offered rational explanations of why it might be a good idea to get a 4870 or 4850 on price/performance.

I personally would get a 4870 purely on the price difference and why should I spend an extra £x which could go towards another 4870 for a few fps here and there. I don't see the new 260 a valid product at its price level personally.

If you're not considering price then why aren't you just buying a 280 or a 4870x2?

I really don't get why you'd ask a question about which graphics card people would buy whilst discounting the amount of money they would pay.

Consider a perfectly spherical graphics card, of uniform density, rotating in simple harmonic motion......

I think the problem is both cards (after checking prices) are in the same ballpark as what the 280 can be had from online.

Ive had the 4870 and got rid of it due to problems with games.

The reason why I said discount price is because I am, currently, waiting until such time as the 260 Maxcore and the 4870 are alligned pricewise.

I appreciate the value for money arguement at current price points but thats not what I am asking.

I am saying discounting the value arguement, which is the better card and why. If you have a particular issue with this you are more than welcome to not offer advice :p

If I was offered a maxcore in a straight swap for my 4870 i'd still turn it down.

- I'm an ATi beta tester, and I enjoy doing it (obviously this doesn't apply to Fox).
- EVERY nVidia card i've had has given me issues.
- With the exception of the nF2-Ultra400, every nVidia chipset i've had has given me issues.
- nVidia cannot stick to a proper driver release schedule, quite frankly it's a damn joke. Not the kind of thing that installs proper confidence in a company.

However Fox, it's clear without a doubt that you want to buy the Maxcore, so just buy it! We don't need thread after thread until you get a majority agreeing with you, simply because it's not going to happen, even at the same price point.

I dunno, i had to get rid of my 4870 due to terrible drivers, while the current nvidia ones are trouble free, its a shame, as i feel the 4870 was a better card than my gtx280, i sort of think of it as an american muscle car, it has huge power, but its not managed well, while the gtx280 is like a mercedes, its fast and quick, but its got a speed limiter holding some of the power back as a trade in for reliability.

I think it really should have been gtx260 216 or a 4870 1gb which for me would have to be the 4870 as i believe it is slightly faster than a standard 260 216. Add in the aa performance then 4870 all the way for me. I think the 4870 is only going to get faster when dx 10.1 is used in games and it should have physx support soon also. Apart from cuda i see no advantages in getting the 260.

well put it this way maxcore = mustang loads of power but just does not do corners. and 4870 Ferrari f430 witch is fast and goes around the corners well :D

If the 216core 260 performs better then go for that once its price is on parity with the 4870.

Of course it's pretty likely that the 4870 will come down in price if Nvidia manage to lower the 216 core 260 to level things out...
