teamocuk.co.uk - does anyone still use it?

It's time to ask the questions I never thought I'd have to. While I realise it has been some time since I have done any significant work on it - blame real life for that - does anyone actually use Team OcUK anymore? Am I wasting my money keeping it alive?

The reason I'm asking - it's been offline since Sunday and no-one appears to have noticed.

If it is kept alive, what does it need in order to make it more useful for the team?

Parts of it were potentially of interest during our recent Rosetta outings, I know you were uploading data for that. However without the site links and stuff being developed, the stats for that never got going.

I always found the site great whilst I was doing seti, but once I moved on it wasn't so useful.

well i still use, i think its an excellent site. was going to post about it being down the other day.

as i mentioned in another thread, the link given for the tiffys needs to be updated to co.uk, and also i think adding the rosetta stats would be good for those of us who fought the pirates.....

Going to spend a day on it this weekend attempting to fix the URL issues. It really needs an overhaul but that's at least 12 weekends' work, so I need to judge if that's going to be worth it, not to mention the ongoing £100+ per month cost.

If I was in your shoes, I'd put the rosetta stuff on there then start working on something folding related and ask for donations. If I found the site useful I'd paypal you £5-10 a year without hesitating. I've already donated to EOC and FahMon.

have to admit that i don't use it much, although I do like that the overtake stats had time to overtake in days with two decimal places, unlike a rounded up number....

I'll be honest. I tend to use Boincstats as it covers all the projects.
Honesty is fine with me. :)

One option I may consider is running the site from home. Besides buying a new disk (which is less than the cost of a months' server), I have the hardware for it. Less reliability but way less cost.

I do use it fairly often and had seen it was down but as you had a notice up I was sure you were aware of the problem :)
If there is little traffic then the home run server sounds like a good option, I'm sure you have a few rigs running 24x7 anyway!
Count me in for a donation if you need it.

I use it heaps, just been busy this week. :)

Can you put the RAH stuff on the main menu now it seems to be working :)

I'd give you one if you needed some support you know that! ;)

I must admit that I'd noticed it had gone missing, but I hadn't got around to commenting its 'Missing' status on the forums. (I only got back from my hols on Monday and I'm still working out the jetlag.)

This site is one of the tabs I regularly have open in Mozilla and check on it at least once a day, mainly since the Rosetta stats where put up there (the Pirates race bringing me back into BOINC for a while).

At first, I thought you had just taken it down for an update, like integrating the Rosetta stats onto the home page, but as it dragged on, I got a bit more suspicious.

I'm quite interested in how the hosting aspect of this stats page work out, especially as you've mentioned bringing it back in-house. How heavy is it to process the stats data as it stands? Is it processor, disk or network bound? What is the outbound network traffic like (in other words, is it practical to host this on an ADSL line with its limited outbound bandwidth). If work permits, I might also be interested in helping out in some way (my job is essentially working with databases, so it might be interesting to get involved in a project like this). I also have a lot of computers round the place that may be useful to host something like this if required.

Apart from this, you have my vote for keeping it going.

Just to reassure you that I haven't forsaken you all, I started the uploads this morning and they're still going. I'll probably quit with the current set and put the rest on a USB stick. When I'm on one of my rare trips into the office tomorrow I can 'abuse' their LES line and upload the rest in an hour or so and then start the update process, which will likely take the rest of the day.

As for what's needed, the site itself runs on a shared hosting account on one server, but it needs a dedicated data server. Because I injected some of my hard earned to part-fund the hosting company's first server or two I currently get the webspace for nowt, though I'm sure that won't go on for ever. It's the data server that sucks up running costs. I currently have 0.4TB of BOINC data on there but a fair proportion of that can be deleted. There's probably only 50GB worth of 'live' data, with the rest being archives.

Hardware-wise, it's the updates that cause the problem. SETI@home in particular eats disks (I've had 3 failures, though only one of those I suspect was the disk itself). It also needs a fair whack of CPU and RAM, but my home server is higher spec than the one in the DC (same CPU but mine's overclocked, and I have a new 4GB RAM kit I haven't installed yet).

The web site employs a caching mechanism to reduce CPU load, and that also reduces data traffic, so it currently only hits 50-100 kbps. Well within ADSL limits.
