Piracy- it's killing PC gaming

For a (new console) game I'd have to work 15 hours at my age to get the money.

Dear lord I hate these piracy threads.

So what if you can't afford it.. owning a game is a privilege, not a god-given right.

I can't afford a (new) car with my wage, but I don't cry about it.

He wasn't trying to justify piracy, just point out to his quoted poster that it is easier to pirate.

its easier just to buy a game

That really isn't true, in order to buy a game i'd need to either:

A- leave the safety of my computer desk and venture into the real world
B- Buy it online and wait a couple of days

In order to pirate i type some words, then double click. I'm not saying it's right by any means, but it is easier.

Hardly..

I click the game in Steam, type in my card number, then a few seconds later the game installs and updates itself. No need to unrar, mount, install, patch and crack.

Steam is easier than piracy ;)

I forgot about steam, which is indeed the best way of buying games legitimately... HOWEVER (dun dun duuuunn!!) newsgroups max out my 20mbit connection, Steam doesn't even come close. If i were to pirate something and buy it on steam at the same time i would be playing the pirated version first. Once again, i'm not condoning it, but it is quicker and easier.

That's just strange.. Steam always manages to max out my connection just fine (17.5Mb). It's no slower than newsgroups, and a lot easier :)

Interesting, i haven't downloaded anything off of steam for quite a while i admit, TF2 was probably the last thing, so i can see there's a good chance they've upgraded their bandwidth.

On that note, is Fallout 3 going to emerge on Steam?

I would be willing to bet that a lot of people who pirate on the consoles buy the pirated burnt disks from "pirated dealers" rather than download it themselves. That would explain some of the difference in numbers. Saying that... I do think pirating on the PC is worse but the gap the developers suggest, saying it is rife on the PC and not a huge problem on the consoles, is a load of cobblers as there IS a significant issue with pirating on both platforms.

The majority of PC users are more internet savvy and download the game themselves when they want to pirate (on the pc and 360) hence increasing download figures.

if you cant afford a game
you dont play it

i cant afford a mustang
so i dont drive one
no matter how much i like the look of it

i want crysis warhead - i have no spare cash this month - so i will get it when i can

and yes - all of those who do pirate games - i look at you as scum

imagine this scenario - you walk into your local game shop

pick up a game and take it to the counter
the guy who walks in before you picks up the same game and takes it out of the shop without paying

he is a scrote
you are not

What skews console game sales figures is the fact they are available from rental shops.
I know what you're thinking - "how much difference can it make" - well, consider this - if Blockbusters, alone, just as an example of one rental chain, buys 20+ copies of moderately popular game for every one of their 10,000+ stores worldwide and appropriately large number to secure enough long term access for their 3.6 million Total Access online users the sales numbers easily go up by at least a million. And that's just one chain.

rjk, there's no point arguing that point, before Ulf or fini start the whole semantics argument between piracy and theft. We'll just end up with 12 pages of name calling, as all the previous piracy threads have descended. :/

i know what you are saying dude
thats just the way i see it
i work hard for my money - my morals dictate that i spend my money on games
i just feel pity for those who have the urge to download any form of media they can get their hands on

its like its human nature for these people to want to rip others off

cept the tag would set off the alarms, next thing you know theres 2 big bouncers looking at you, you decide to make a run for it. the 2 bouncers leg it after you your running down the street next thing you no WHAM right into the lamp post bouncers grab you give you a few "beats" cuz they can drag your ass back to the shop call the fuzz and you in jail (OH NOES!!!)
Only to relise when your in the clink hang on it proberbly didnt even have the game disc in the box

All that hassle for barbie goes to wonderland  tragic

I dunno where this story came from ...... :D

LOL, it always makes me laugh when people say 'OMG SCUM111!!!one2' about people who pirate games. The term scum should be left for sub-humans like the one in this thread:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17929547

That is an example of real scum. Somebody who pirates a few games is not 'scum'. Dubious morals maybe, but hardly 'scum'.

And will people stop with the stupid comparisons to stealing a car or other tangible item. It's NOT the same thing. Piracy is copyright infringement, NOT theft. They are two seperate things in the eyes of the law.

bleh most pirates are under 25 in my experience, they'll grow out of it someday..maybe, half of them don't even play the games they download very much its just simply about the downloading and accumulation of more and more free games
