Right...

I've decided that I'm gonna build myself a new machine, and seeing as the last time I opened up a pc case was a LONG time ago - I thought I'd ask you guys..

I'm a bit stuck, however 'cos I really like the idea of the shuttle form factor - but realise that with heat from graphics cards etc - it may not be the easiest thing to achive...

Basically, I'm looking for a machine that will play the latest games but on a budget of £1000.

I'm thinking Intel / NVIDIA - but people tell me that the ATI cards are really good at the mo... so I dunno!

£1000 is to include an OS and a monitor (although I do have monitor that I could use until I could save more pennies...)

So.. do your worst folks!

Cheers

Hi itsallaboutyou, I have created a specification for you below. If you have any questions about any of the components I have chosen, feel free to ask: :)

Hey! Cheers for that - unfortunately 'cos I'm stuck in work, I cant view photobucket - could you perhaps email it to my address in trust?!

If not, I'll have to hang on until I get home!

Thanks!

If itsallaboutyou is going to be used for gaming would it worth changing the CPU to one of E8XXX series cpu's.

Thanks guys!

@RJC - I think I'd be best sticking with the quad core? Or...

Any help gratefully received!

I'm gonna be ordering tomorrow morning I think, so any last minute thoughts let me know!

Ta

EDIT// The ram doesnt seem to be available anymore!

Right chaps... ended up with slightly a bit more money... whats the best bang I can get for my 1100 squid!

Once again to include a monitor and an OS

I'm looking at the antec 300 case and preferably the ATI 4870 card... or maybe the X2?

Or would it be better for me looking to get two 512mb card in crossfire? or nvidia SLI? I'm an absolute noob again!

Its gonna be mainly for games, so I understand that a Duo processor would be better, mainly 'cos no games can take advantage of the quad cores yet... but I also believe that the 4870 x2 card doesnt scale very well unless its on a quad core... hmm!

Fire Wizard - are you out there!?

Cheers in advance guys! :)

No it doesn't scale very well if the game doesn't support Crossfire.

Hi itsallaboutyou, a ATI Radeon 4870 X2 will only really show it's full potential when you have a screen that is able to display a resolution of 1920 x 1200 or higher and I'm afraid you won't be able to fit a screen of that size with the budget that you have without getting a rather low quality screen and downgrading some of the other components as well. Now, some people may be absolutely fine with that. However, I personally don't like doing that and would rather have a well balanced system.

Now, with regards to either a Quad Core or a Dual Core processor. I would personally have a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 running at around the 3.6GHz mark which is fast enough as it is than a Dual Core Wolfdale running at 4GHz. Have a read through this thread here. Though, to be honest, weather you go for either a Quad Core or a Dual Core processor, they will both perform very well in games, even at stock speeds. :)
