Man Utd - Best Squad Ever?

for the first two or three months of Evra's Man Utd career he was absolutely **** (his Debut against City didnt help with his confidence) but after that he has been incredible, his attacking play since then has been the best in the league but defenisively he has raised his game also

From his positioning (behind Scholes) and the fact he is there to tackle (as we all know PS cant do that for toffee), Carrick is a defensive mid - but that isnt really what he does at all, and thats because defensive mids more often than not take control of the ball in midfield and majority of the time short pass to a defender or midfield colleague - however the range of passing Carrick has available is much greater than this, spreading the play to the edge of the opponants box and far corners with ease

(at £17m Nani was never purchased as a sub)

Alongside Rio and Ronaldo, Carrick has become one of the most vital players in the team, Scholesy's a spent force now, I think we'll see him in a much diminished role now. I think Carrick/Anderson or Carrick/Hargreaves should be our midfield with Fletcher (and hopefully young Possebon in the future) as backup. Anderson and Hargreaves both have a high energy game while Carricks got that bit of class and vision to destroy a defence with one pass. I'd even prefer Giggsy in the middle to Scholesy at the moment. I think he's still got a lot to offer as an AM. I think he links up well with the front players especially.

Apparently Ferguson said he's going to use Giggs in the middle now.

How do you feel about that? I can see the sense of not relying on the pace (or loss of) of Giggs on the wing and still using his experience but i dont see how the hell he would get into the team. Would he play in the middle ahead of Scholes (injury aside) Carrick, Anderson, Hargreaves, Fletcher or even Possebon?

I think it's a great idea, but I certainly wouldn't give him his contract yet.
He's been on a rolling contract now for 3 or so years and every time the contract talk is in the air he's exceptional, running stuff down, surging with purpose, pass and move, then he gets the contract and he's lazy - I thought it must have been co-incidnce the first time, the second time an outside chance, the third time (last season) though I think it's a case of working hard for the contract then resting on his laurels.

Giggs has plenty of guile in his passing and through balls, so his head in the middle could work well, but only if Scholes isn't playing. The problem I have is the same as you and many other Man Utd fans I know, I simply couldn't start him ahead of Anderson or Hargreaves. Carrick is pretty much a guaranteed starter, he's that important, so in the middle Giggs has to be 4th choice. He's also be my second choice on the left-wing after Park/Ronaldo and 5th choice up top behind Rooney, Tevez, Berbatov and Manucho.

We dont have a left winger, thats the problem. People dont see the value of Carrick either. With everyone fit Carrick is a starter in midfield and Hargreaves will always play.

Ronaldo, Nani, Park and Anderson can all cover on the left, the first 3 being the priorities and rotations (well, Nani and Park - Ronaldo is a guaranteed starter).

I would love to see a midfield of Ronaldo, Anderson, Carrick, Hargreaves. Really think Hargreaves can do a job down the right.

I didn't say it was the wrong decision, not at all, but he is best on the right. If you played Nani and Ronaldo they could interchange more easily, but then again Hargreaves is better than Nani.

Personally I'd just go and throw £30m at Villa for Young, or include some of our players as trade value - that is of course if we can afford to.

£30m? I dont think id pay that much, I guess you would need to offer that to unsettle him and get them interested though.
Good to see someone else holds him so highly too, iv heard so many people knock him etc, only for him to bang in a great cross or belt a lovely FK the week after and still not get the public recognition

It's what we paid for Berbatov. We paid £20m for an unknown in Nani. £30m for Rooney.
Young is, erm... young, and a major talent.

I would rather have spend £30m on Young than Berbatov.

We paid £17m for Nani

How you can compare a comparatively untested Young to a much more known Berbatov I will never know, completely ridiculous comparison

Not saying Young wouldnt be worth it, maybe he would but he doesnt deserve to be talked about in the same breath at the moment.

As for the left wing, while Ronaldo (and to a lesser extent Park) can play there, I think you get about 75% of their ability if you play them in that position. and Nani isnt that much better on the right (the only other natural wide player) to make it worth moving either across

Anderson is good on the left, although at times he has tended to drift in and out of games in that position (he is still young and it isnt his natural position so its worth experimenting with but not for a crucial game)

Once the Brazillians get more acquainted (and one of them recovers from the shoulder injury) - maybe for next season, we may see Evra being pushed more forward to the left wing which could work even better than any other player we currently have (or most options available at a reasonable price)

Young is younger, better and English, he should cost more. Saying that he's not worth £30m but neither was Berbatov.

He obviously isnt better (according to SAF and a few others)

Neither are half the transfer fees paid these days, its what the selling club is able to get

two seasons ago people said £18m for Carrick wasnt worth it, but after his 100 performances for Utd , and being the core of the team that won two league titles and a CL its money well worth spent

Time will tell with Berbatov whether he was worth it or not

Ashley Young is not worth 30 million pounds. Berbatov was not worth 30 either BUT he is a player we needed.

Many people are unconvinced by Nani, but I can't help but feel this is in part to his attitude and his antics. He is obviously talented and played an important role last season with assists (Everton away) and a few great goals (Spurs at home). He has started badly this season but I hope he can come good, he afterall plays often for portugal whilst Young does not for England.

Perhaps he will follow like Ronaldo (albeit not quite as good) or end up like Reyes. Often paying big sums for young non British players is a risky business as they may not adopt to the culture or be able to curb some of thier play acting which they have been taught to do since a young age.
