Looking at the 300GB VelociRaptors, whats the difference between the two below;

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3000GLFS)

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3000BLFS)

Am I right in thinking that the main type for desktops is the GLFS version?

As far as I understand :

BLFS : 2.5" for server backplanes/cadies (NOT laptops)
GLFS : 3.5" original, connectors are in wrong position for SATA backplane connections
HLFS : 3.5" new, standard connector positions for SATA backplane compatibility

backplane compatibility doesn't matter for most normal case mountings, only for hotswap bays etc

I think one has an extra board to move the connector into a more convienient place and one does not.
Correct, the GLFS doesn't conform to the SATA connector location standards hence can't be used in standard backplanes / enclosures. The HLFS rectifies this

Am I right in thinking that the main type for desktops is the GLFS version?
Either will work in a normal desktop environment, it's the same drive inside after all. I'd avoid the GLFS version though, you never know when you might want to use the drive in an enclosure.

Does anyone know what firmware the BLFS / 2.5" drive is? I know it's meant for servers, but seeing as removing the icepack from the 3.5" reduces the drive noise, but voids the warranty, I'd like to know if the 2.5" drives have the newer firmware or not?
