Have supermarkets gone mad?

This is very simple - I will not have a company dragging their plastic wrapped shiney apples on a plastic tray on a plane from Argentina teach me about green credentials. It would be like letting street walker teach me about celibacy.

- If it's the biodegradable aspect they pretend to be so concerned about then give me an option of free, recycled paper bags. Perfectly biodegradable, very easy to re-use, they do it all over US and Canada for ages. End of thread

- If I am to pay for the bag, then I want that bag to be fit for purpose (ie not like M&S charging for the same non-biodegradable, shoddy bag) and have no shop logo. You can't have a cake and eat it all - I paid for the bag, the bag is mine, I see no reason to advertise your penny pinching name.

Meanwhile, let's not forget who should be teaching who - so I propose we all go to M&S and after paying for our single carrier bag start unpacking their products on the till, leaving them with pile of empty boxes and plastic wrappers - if you are to pay for the transportation of their goods, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to fit all in one bag and leave them with their eco-junk. It was their decision to start dick measuring contest.

Just go shopping with a Trenchcoat with inside pockets the size of bags.

Problem solved.

You'll also look like a rapist but who cares eh.

The supermarkets are dumb.

What they should be doing is charging an extra 1p for milk, bread, butter, cheese etc. This would then pay the little bit extra for re-use bags or recycled ones.

Who in there right mind would pay for a bag when you can get bags for free. I know the old plastic bags create hell at landfill, but until theres a free alternative I could'nt care less.

I'm sorry but, are you intentionally being dense? China pumps out more crap than us, because THEY MAKE ALL OUR STUFF. If they stopped making it to drop emissions massively, we'd simply have to take over manufacturing and the crap being pumped out is exactly the same amount.

Governments are quite happy to blame china while their countries live using the goods they produce. ITs exactly the same complete BS save the planet clap trap as the bags, pretend its the problem when its not. They are just blaming someone else, and you're blaming someone else by blaming China.

I would have to disagree here.... If we took over manufacturing then we would not pump out the same emissions.... There is the technology out there to reduce the amount of emissions given off, if we were to manufacture things we would implement them however the chinese just seem to overlook these technologies

BUT

Why should china have to implement these expensive technologies and have a slow start in manufacturing when we put out a **** load of emissions when we started manufacturing with no thought for the ruture... blah blah blah, sure you get my point

Plastic bags take thousands and thousands of years to degrade, so in reality they are your bags for life.

I have a mental image of all the manufacturers who make bin bags rubbing their hands in glee when people trot out this as reason not to give out bads at supermarkets. I know lots of people who previously would just get enough plastic bags from their weekly shop to last them as rubbish bags for the whole week but now, thanks to this, have to purchase bin bags.

As for plastic bags taking thousands of years to degrade ... well put something in one in your garage or loft and the chances are you'll find that it's disintegrated with in a couple of years.

I really don't see the problem. Take your own bag and use that. Saves money, hassle, waste and potentially the environment.

I think it’s hypercritical that the supermarkets are using the environmental issue for promoting their company and business. As for the bags, and although every little helps (no pun for Tesco intended) maybe they should look at their own packaging policy before using carrier bags as a promotion gimmick. Has anyone seen the skip they use at the back of the store? It’s pretty appalling really.

Just came back from Portugal, they don't recycle anything, you just throw all of your rubbish into a huge bin dug into the ground. Obviously I do think it's important we do look after the Environment and plastic bags and the amount of packing used by supermarkets is a disgrace.

I agree with a lot of the comments in this thread over the mentality of the supermarkets - charging for bags whilst simultaneously wrapping fruit in clingfilm, fruit that has it's own protective skin!

I think some of the schemes are good.

Safeways old green box scheme was good - buy the box for a few quid then it was yours, the supermarket had special trolleys they fit in so you could just lift the box from the trolley into the boot - no mess or bags and the boxes were resuable over and over in and out of the supermarket.

I like the fact that some supermarkets and stores give you extra points for bringing your own bag or such, Waterstones gets so much more business of off me because I get more points for no bags on my reward card AND I actually get a useful reward - instant money off on books instore on the spot as I collect them.

Tesco's pretty much throw bags at you, I got asked if i wanted a bag (they had one ready to put it in) for a pack of chewing gum yesterday :p

I love tesco, **** the enviroment and have another bag sir. :D

I was with my dad shopping who is not a patient man, here she is spoon feeding him 1 bag at a time for 5 peoples 2 weeks of shopping. Queue my dad, "you want to give me more bloody bags love im not a blooming hippy" She gives him this dirty look and dumps about 10 bags down.

:D bunch of dam OMG save the planet no bags hippies.

I just don't see the point of it, re-using bags isn't going to save the environment. They are just tackling the easy issues rather than going after the main problems, main one being pollution from cars, planes and factories.

We wouldn't need to be so fussy about all these minor problems like plastic bags if they could hurry up and find an alternative to fossil fuels.

Plastic bags take thousands and thousands of years to degrade, so in reality they are your bags for life.

no, no they don't, and no thier not.

For one they are not fit for purpose as a bag for life because they suck balls at lasting moer than a few times.

and as for thousands of years to degrade thats just wrong and has been for quite some time now.
