hello everyone,

Ive tried to read other posts but not sure if it answers my question. Basically im hitting the gym to lose the belly tbh that is the only fat on me. Now i also want to bulk up a little and become healthy. My question is what kind of protein shake should i pick up from holland and barratt? i prefer chocolate flavour :p. Another question is how many times a day should i have it? and should i have one after a gym work out?

Will appreciate the replies. Thanks

Go buy some Whey poweder and mix up the shakes your self.

With whey powder you can have a different flavour every day:D

To be honest I'd say from your posts you've no need for protein shakes at the moment. I recommend you get a decent diet sorted out and when that's done use a protein shake hows its meant to be used, as a suppliment.

Protein shakes aren't some miracle cure, they are a way of getting extra protein into your diet.

Don't buy holland and barrats stuff. Go somewhere like bulkdiscount or myprotein. Oh, and read the sticky, itll help a lot.

Ant

if you're wanting to lose the belly lay off the protein shakes, eat a proper diet.

Why does everyone seem to think weightloss/gym = protein shake?
Id put money on the fact you have a belly that you already get enough protein in your diet. A shake is just more calories, its going to hinder your weight loss, you will be building the muscle and getting all the protein you need from your diet as a beginner at the gym

I'm a little confussed about these shakes. I have started going to the gym and do enjoy myself now, rather than going out of guilt.

Could I replace Breakfast/Lunch with a shake, and have a carb free evening meal... achieve a slightly faster weight loss?

Im not sure, but whats going to happen when you'v lost your weight and decide to start eating breakfast/lunch again? hello again belly?
Shakes should only be for the people who genuinly need the supplements ontop of their regular BALANCED diet, you not being one of these people.
Too many people seem to think that shake = lose weight&get buff, thats strictly isnt true, diet and hard work is what gets you there.

Oh I understand that, but the question remains... would I do myself any harm if I were to do what I've asked? :)

no, but you wont do yourself any good, and you will take longer to achieve your goals, and you will also have to try and readjust to a normal diet anymore.
Ill take that back, yes you will do yourself harm, you wont have a healthy balanced diet.
Why on earth do you want to go and buy protein shakes when you are being told you just need to eat a balanced diet and work hard. Protein shakes contain a lot of calories.
You are not a bodybuilder.

Protein shakes will not make you big and strong. They are to supplement any protein defficiency in your diet if you're pushing your body beyong the normal realm of a diet.

To me it sounds as though protein shakes are not going to achieve anything for you. Protein helps the development of muscle fibres as part of it's process, however losing the belly and bulking up is achievable without protein powders. Just eat well and sleep well and lift heavy.

Protein shakes aren't a wonder powder that will bulk you up and lean you out. Why do people think this?!

Can I ask a question in this thread. Just coming to the end of my current (high street brand) protein tub and want to order online, looking on myprotein.co.uk and a bit confused by all the types on offer. *** should I be going for. I dont train heavily I do an imtermediate workout 3-4 times per week (weight training)

If someone can help id be very grateful :)

Some excellent replies in this thread, spot on info :)

I haven't drank protein shakes for month now, i choose to get all my protein from unprocessed whole food sources. Not only is the protein from food superior, it's far more enjoyable!

Protein shakes are for bodybuilders/powerlifters looking for cheaper, more convenient ways of getting more amino acids into their diet. That's it, that's all they are... if you don't fall into this category then you won't really be gaining anything from drinking them.

They have many advantages when used in the right context but people seem to think they're something 'special'?

Whatever you do stay away from H&B's stuff, no matter how cheap it is it's still not worth it, absolute crap!!

TBH i havnt worked out for a month or so but ive been drinking a glass of milk in the morning with my breakfast and adding a scoop of whey in it. and having one before bed aswell.

And Even though i havnt been working out ive been growing muscle quite quickly since i started drinking a whey shake morning and night

But that is probably because i have a very physical job.

So my conclusion on shakes while not working out much is that it will still help a bit if you have a physical/active job. It even helps keeps me from getting hungry before lunch:)

I seriously doubt that has anything to do with the shakes. In fact it's rubbish, you won't "grow muscles" just by drinking protein shakes. You need serious laborous activity and muscle stimulation for that to happen, so at a guess your physically demanding job is probably doing more for your muscle hypertrophy than protein shakes.

Yup. Coupled with the fact that since taking whey you've been paying more attention to your physique and perceive changes more readily :)

There is no miracle cure, and its a shame that the marketed world we live in continues to make people delude themselves.

No miracle? greg valentino (and many more sensible users) say different :p

Im not saying its the shakes alone:)

I can spend half a day swinging 14 pound sledge hammers occasionally and anything i even go to pick up is bloody heavy and im up and down laders, long ramps and 6-7 foot high rock faces all day long:p

Ive been watching my weight and my body shape and strengh fo ages and ive been gaining much more since drinking the shakes then before.
I dont just really on them either though, i do eat quite healthy and have quite a bit of turkey, chicken and steak for tea most nights and eat a fair bit of hight protien foods along with lots of veges.

But from my perspective i have noticed im developing muscle and strengh that little bit more quicker now then i was with out the extra boost i get from the shakes.
