Tell me about: mk3 Golf VR6

Yea becuase a Prelude is a real road rocket

Indeed but better than a vr6 golf in most areas covered in the OP. Not that a road rocket was suggested anyway, not when were talking about VR6 golfs.

The VR6 I drove was like driving a sofa. Very disappointed.

Dunno how much practicality you need, but what about a mk1 mr2, lovely revvy 1.6 engine, nice light chuckable car, and £1500 will get you a solid example, if not less. I'd take one over a mk3 golf any day :p

I've got a VR6 and I absolutely love it. It's not a rocket ship but fast enough for some spirited driving. I don't know if mine has anything done previously to the suspension as I've never drove any other VR6's to compare but mine certainly isn't barge like, it doesn't wallow in corners but at the same time it's a comfy ride.

It seems well screwed together and coming upto two years of ownership the only thing I've had go wrong was the revs went all over the place when driving and the idle went very erratic.
I read on a VR6 forum that some of the sensors (MAF, throttle position etc) need resetting. This was performed by turning the ignition two clicks and leaving it for about 30 secs with the door and bonnet open. You can then hear a whirring and faint clicking in the engine. I then started the car and it was perfect.

I can't recommend them enough, I'm probably going to have to get rid of mine within the next few months and I'm going to be absolutely gutted. Make sure you take your time and find a good one.

MK3 Golf VR6. Well they sound nice. VW build quality. Go fairly well. Not particularly tuneable on a budget, or cheap to run generally. Corrado VR6 is a completely different car (much better handling and feel). Arguably a better buy might be a 20 valve turbo early MK4 golf?

Neighbour just swapped his Punto GT turbo for one. It sounds great when he boots it away! I think his is an earlier one with the 12V engine, timing chains tensioners are apparantly an issue the fixing of which requires fairly extensive work. I get the impression they aren't generally reliable but are fun to drive.

Have you thought about a VTS, pick them up pretty cheap, and are great fun.

EDIT: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/701404.htm

I tell you what, I've looked at them and as cars I really like them, I always have. Part of me has always fancied a stripped and caged track-toy Saxo. Unfortunately the image does put me off. Sounds daft, but I can't help but think that a 6" tall 17.5 stone shaven-headed 32-year-old would look a complete and utter tool driving a Saxo :(

£2k would probs get you a uk spec ca18det with a bottom end made of butter. hard finding a decent one thats on lower miles or has had a rebuild.

Yeah, bottom end concerns are what puts me off the S13 TBH.

Interesting, I hadn't realised they were in my budget. How are they for reliability?

Here are 205s to have a look at mate;

Most are sold but gives you an idea. Mi16 is ~160bhp and with the weight of the 205 won't be far off 200bhp/tonne.

Probably one of the faster / capable options so far.

If its FWD, cheap and french then the 205 wins in my book. Only reason I had to sell my last 2 was to make room for my Impreza. Technically one was the wifes but you know how wimmin are when power steering only happens to posh people. :D
