Two classics just arrived

Ssssssssilver.....!!!!! Ah, the memories:) Always remembered the calm music during the installation and then the loud scream at the end after the game had installed. Never understood that part:confused:

Right I found the two important patches here:

http://www.abby-cheat.com/modules.php?name=Patches&letter=I

3dfx one first, followed by the 1.24. make sure you follow the guide on 1.24 one.

I don't have time to play it properly now, and I'm defintley having problems with missing videos, but otherwise this it's working perfectly under Vista 64.

Now just need to tackle Silver. Got the files sorted but I keep getting an error when I run it.

I remember reading about this problem before (missing videos). Have you copied them off the CD to the installation folder on the hard drive? I think there is a fix for this mentioned on the forum I linked to a page or so back :)

I did read about that but I've yet to give it a go. Will do tonight after work.

Well copied the videos over but still getting no joy :(

edit:

Scratch that it's working. Just getting an annoying crash on the second mission. Just going to try some further tweaking.

If you manage to get Silver working on XP please post how you did it in detail! I still have the game but haven't managed to get it to work :(

I have silver working a bit but there's this horizontal graphics corruption on the animated backdrops that makes it unplayable :(

That's where i got stuck, such a shame as that was the first RPG i ever played in my life, it is probably the game that got me into gaming.

Could you do me a huge favor and drop me an email if you manage to get it working, i have the original copy hidden away in my room somewhere and would kill to have it working again. I'll try and remember this thread but i imagine i'll probably forget hence why i requested the email (address can be found in my trust). Good luck, for the both of us! :D

I've actually just worked out a really dirty hack that might do the job if there's no other solution.

Basically I found a patcher that edits the number of horizontal lines on screen pertaining to the animated backdrops. If I set that to 1 pixel then I can see the whole image fine but without any animation on the backdrops.

Now the game will play fine this way but it's not ideal. Better than the horrible image distortion before though

The ability to simply play through the game again would make it worth it, however one of the most captivating parts of the game were the (then) ground breaking quality of the background animations. You've inspired me to revive the quest to get this game running on modern operating systems, to the geek mobile!

dalalalal dalaalala daaaaaa (with added batman esque zooming in and out of an image of me leaping into my clapped out corsa)

Holy **** I fixed it!!

The app I was talking about, by default it auto detects what the correct number of horizontal pixels for the animated backdrops should be. It was picking up 640 pixels on its own which wasn't making any difference so I tried some playing around myself. Set it to 768 and patched the executable and now it works perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so happy right now!! Two secs and I'll upload a copy of the patched executable.

Replace silver.exe with the one in the archive above and you'll be laughing!

I thought I had it working but I didn't :(

Got through the intro vid then when it goes to the loading screen it just crashes to desktop after about 20 secs :( Any ideas ?????

Are you using the execuable I linked? I'm 99% sure that was the latest version.

Not that I needed to do it but you might benefit from running in compatibility mode.

Yeah used your .exe and ran it in windows 98 compatibility mode :( how bloody annoying! Although this is a lot further than I got last time lol ;):(

The Error I get pop up when it crashes is

"Exception: Access Violation"

Have a read here. Basically the executable I posted is the geforce2 exe fix that everyone goes on about (apparently benefits everyone, not just geforce users) that I've used silverpatcher.exe on to change the cache/res setting to 768.

Someone on that forum I linked recommended using 3d analyser and a cominbation of cpu killer. I'm not sure if that would do the trick tbh but it's not a bad place to start. Have a read basically.

Ah, 64 Bit Vista

;___;

There goes any chance of running anything retro!

I'm running Silver and I-War under Vista 64. I-War needs a little more tweaking but otherwise everythings great.

edit:

I'd just like to add that I've been guessing at what silverpatcher.exe does exactly as there's no documentation, but it does have something to do with the resolution of the animated back drops.
