British bacon.

Colchester isnt too big, and i live just on the edge :)

I may just force my parents to do this, i imagine it saves quite a bit of cash with the price of meat these days?

Find out who does the best meat local to you.

Its not about the money savings IMO, but more about the nice fresh well produced meat your buying.

The last thing you want is to spend £300 (random figure) on some pork and then find that its absolutely rank when you eat it.

Hope that helps :)

I can't taste the difference between different kinds of bacon like British and Danish, etc. I have both in the fridge and had a bit of both this morning but I honestly couldn't distinguish the difference. But then again, I'm the same for different varieties of steaks and chicken, etc. Maybe I'm not a dining connoisseur:p

Doesnt America have bacon?

No it has crispy fat, imagine the worst/cheapest kind of streaky bacon you can get in the uk then serve it crispy. Thats what americans eat.

It always amazes me that for a country so huge and rich they cannot do decent sausages, bacon or cheese.

Cheese in america either comes in a squirty bottle or is called american cheese or swiss. The only difference is the food colouring. Rubberised rubbish.

Surely all you have to do is NOT FRY IT AS LONG? Or find a proper butcher and get him to sell you a few slices of the non-streaky bits?

Food in general here is utter tripe.

I wouldn't go that far. Just a lot of 'English' food items are not the same at all :( I miss sausages, shepards pie, toad in the hole & a good roast dinner so much. But all the good stuff that I do like is awesome - it's so cheap to eat here it's crazy!
Oh, the above plus a proper Indian meal (but that's not technically English :p)

I miss English staple foods too :(
Not to a depressing degree or anything but there's lots you can't get here bacon as mentioned, sausages, cider and soft white bread/rolls. Thankfully Tesco and M&S are over here and provide the staples of Worcestershire sauce, marmite, Bisto, Oxo, stuffing etc.

Clipsey surely shepherds pie, toad in the hole and roasts can be made with pretty simple ingredients like mince, potatos, flour, milk, egg, etc that you can get in the US? I make all of them here in CZ as the ingredients are pretty basic.

This is true, however let me rephrase my original statement - I miss my mums home made cooking :p

Clipsey, are you able to find mince lamb anywhere? I travelled every where and the only place I can find it, very rarely is at Publix and even then they have like one pack of it. There arn't any butchers to ask either :(

I watched only fools are horses yesterday too, every episode they seemed to eat bangers and mash or a fry up

No mate, but to be honest I have not really looked either ;) I always just go for the chicken or beef at the moment - and lately some ground turkey. I head home for a few weeks in December and can't wait for some home cooked English meals :D
There is a wild tale around these parts that in fact there is some sort of sausage over here that resembles an English one - I don't believe it so far
