Considering purchasing a mondeo petrol or diesel, ideally a ghia x one for around 4kish.

Doing around 15k a year, are there any known issues with the 2.0 petrol units, I know the diesels can be riddled with expensive problems, but what about the petrols?

Thanks :)

Petrol is bomb proof, the TDCi can be a ticking time bomb.

Usual thing with the petrol look at service intervals and reciepts of where it's been seriviced, check the paint work thourouly the paint was a bit crap before the facelift iirc.

You WILL get a better condition petrol for the money.

plus derv = dag dag dag etc

Buying new or used? If used, whats the budget?

The 2.2TDCI are a PITA, with huge injector problems, including misfires. (No idea ig this is fixed now, I am talking about the circa 2005 2.2TDCI).

I think it's a case of history with the dervs. Now I don't know for sure but what seems to cause problems with the French common rails is when they are not serviced properly or regularly enough. If you don't bother to drain the water out of the fuel filter housing and change the fuel filter on the button then water and other nasties damage the system, specifically the injectors. So... I reckon high miles is not necessarily a problem but if serviceing is sporadic then walk away because you are just asking for trouble.

If you are only doing 15k a year to be honest I would just buy the 2.0 petrol... I would. To be honest I am also considering as my next car a 2.0 petrol with LPG conversion. Will your purchase be new enough for there to be a Titanium model?

large derv engines for the lose! Poor economy, more expensive servicing. Why bother?

We have 2.0 TDCi's at work and they are all 3 years old between 60k and 80k and they're getting shut because although they had nice long runs everyday, the problem is the company owned them so they often completley missed service intervals. You know those hydraulic cars in Los Angeles? They ain't got nothing on a ****ed Mondeo TDCi.

Ok

I just wonderd as i know car manufactures some times use same engines in diffrent stuff

thought they might have had a smaller version of it.

since they seem to be very reliable having done 180k Miles and no problems on our van

What's the first things to go wrong on the petrols on these? How many miles are they usually good for before becoming stupidly expensive?

Check the condensor is not rusted too badly. Check that the air conditioning blows properly cold, fault could be the condensor or a regas. On the pre-facelift models one of the aircon pipes was poorly designed and rubbed itself until it leaked - fixed around about June 2002.

Look out for a wierd/failing handbrake. The early models used a self adjusting mechanism which didn't self-adjust. This can result in siezed rear brake calipers. The handbrake cables then need to be replaced - I got mine done for £60 from a local garage. If the caliper is siezed it could cost more.

Look very carefully at the very bottom of all the doors for rust. For several years they did not put enough sealant on them, allowing rust to come through. Ford recognised it as a fault but can be stingy to repair it if you don't have the rust inspection stamps - honestly who does?

The petrol engines are reasonably simple, there isn't really one thing which kills them.

Bit of a step down from your current car jamoor, are you sure you won't get a bit miffed with a Mk3 Mondeo?

No, it's a different engine and it has 145bhp.

145bhp should be more than adequate for a family car. Ok it will not set the world on fire...

Considering the performance/price considerations/reliability concerns/lack of mileage I just can't see how it's a good idea to opt for the TDCI.
