It's easy to be negative about our little island, and I've been slating it plenty lately while out on the tiles, so....

I've been agonising over this exact question the past few weeks and I've come up with this:

* The Lake and Peak Districts
* Kent and East Sussex Country pubs
* Black humour, especially when someone famous dies
* Elgar
* Cornwall

I'd really like to see other people's ideas :) I suppose if you like, it's a thinly-veiled convince me to come back home type of thing ;)

Everyone is seperate like thier space etc, won;t really talk to strangers., but when theres a problem/crisis, even somthing minor like a black out people actually then start talking and will help each other.

What I don't like in my particular area is that 10 years ago, everyone up my street knew each other and would help each other regardless. Now, there's such a churn - mostly due to to BTL landlords. No one talks to each other :(

- Architecture
- Heritage
- History
- Weather (in some seasons mainly autumn)

What i dont like is Chav's, binge drinking and the emphasis on multi-culturism, i dont mind other culture's living here i just hate it when it's shoved down our throat.

The distinctive accents, the good old pound sterling, intelligence, the historical and well mixed architectural places, the ridiculousness of the highest and lowest classes; from the stab-happy chav to the pompous polo playing toffs.

Talking from experience. 8 years in South Africa, 5 Years in America, 6 Years and counting in UK.

- Pubs: More the family orientated ones.
- Heritage/History: Castles, Building that are over 1000 years old. (Don't get that in USA or RSA)
- America was very patriotic. Flags on houses, flags on cars, monuments etc. All good things but i think America is a bit OTT when it comes to that sorta stuff. They are also all brainwashed...if the Terrorism level rises to yellow or orange everyone goes mad and rushes off to buy milk and food for weeks. They are very much under the thumb of the media/GWB. So I like the fact that the UK just does its own thing, everyone has thier own life and doesn't worry about what is going on.
- Cars. You English people have some funny little cars that you don't get in USA or RSA. Also very different brands...when i first came here i was like "wtf is a Renault, Peugeot, Smart car?" etc.
- All the accents...Cockney, Northern etc.

And just to add...the worst thing about this country. The lack of sunshine.

Because its where I was brought up and have lived most of my life, it's where my friends and family are.

I spent two years living in Canada. I'd rather live there.

I'm rather fond of the weather, it doesn't make planning long term events easy but it ain't half interesting having rain, snow, sleet, sunshine and winds all in one day.

I like the sense of humour and general sense of fair play that is evinced although perhaps less often now than formerly.

Good post, i'd be interested to hear the thought of more people that have lived in other parts of the world. Things like the castles etc that you mentioned, it may seem a bit silly but i'd never even considered that other countries might not have them!

Im only 22 but I believe the 60/70's truely were a great decade to grow up in even though I never seen them with my own eyes. I think england was a great place then.

I think our food is great especial classics like fish and chips, steak pie and sausages.

I love out countryside too.

What I hate is the chav and drinking to excess culture.
