Ferrari threaten walk-out if engines standardised

Mon 27 Oct, 06:07 PM

ROME (AFP) - Ferrari have indicated they could re-evaluate their commitment to Formula One if plans to standardise engines for all teams competing in the world championship become reality.

Formula One has seen many teams taken over by car-makers in recent years with Renault, BMW, Toyota and Honda joining Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz in using the sport as a showcase for their brands and cars.

However faced with rising costs and calls for major reforms to help boost the sport the International Motoring Federation (FIA) announced last week plans to cut costs and standardise engines.

The FIA said it will be open to tenders for the standardised engine and transmission to be used from 2010.

Ferrari, in a statement released following a board meeting on Monday, said they "fully agreed with the need for a substantial and necessary reduction of costs".

But the Italian firm said it had "major reservations" over any proposals that would lead to teams using the same engines: "... it would deprive Formula One of its whole reason for existing, which is based on competition and technological development".

The statement added: "It is thanks to these elements that Ferrari has been a continual and integral part of Formula One since 1950.

"If these elements were to become obsolete, our Administrative Council (board) reserves the right, after consultation with its partners, to evaluate whether we remain committed to the discipline (of Formula One)."

good for Ferrari standing up to this idea, hopefully more teams follow suit to make the FIA think again if they can force this issue

Great, because BMW, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes (so McLaren), Ferrari, and Renault all leaving F1 is great for its future success.....

The last thing we need is another low tech standard drive chain Formula. Theres already GP2/A1GP/WSR and the FIA's own F2.

Actually, is there even a top level single seater formula that has unique team technology anymore?!

F1 isn't all about the drivers. It's about the teams and the manufacturers. TBH I think it should be degregulated if anything.

Well said Ferrari. F1 should not seek to standardise engines, nor in my opinion should it impose rules to slow cars down (grooved tyres etc).

F1 should be a showcase for performance and technical excellence and its governing body should only be concerned with driver safety and spectator enjoyment.

Actually, I do agree with there being some standardisation.

Like the ECU, and possibly the gearbox. But definately not the engine or the chassis. Im in 2 minds about customer chassis though. Yes, it would be great to see more cars on the grid, but im not a fan of the 'B Team' ethos that comes with it.

Although I would like to applaud to Ferrari for this move, what are the chances of their engines being picked for being the single manufacturer any way..? ;)

Seriously though, I hope the others stand up too.

I would imagine most of the manufacturer teams feel the same way. I agree with the majority of that Max said in that interview a few weeks ago regarding cost cutting etc, but not they way they are going about it.

The changes are supposed to make the sport sustainable, but all it's going to do is alienate the fans and [manufacturer] teams, and ultimately lead to it's demise as the supposed pinnacle of motorsport.

Im shocked that the FIA chose Williams Chassis and Audi Engines for the F2 series. Although Ferrari are tied to A1GP now.

All the teams in FOTA have signed a deal to say they won't be supplying the engine if it happened so the FIA will have to go outside the sport with the tender.

:( it seems the FIA wants to destroy f1 racing. F1 is as much about technology as it is driver skill. If they want a same car sport watch one of the many which are allready about.
F1 design is already far far to standardised and is getting a hole lot worse next year. Let alone all this other guff.

wells said. deregulate and increase the designers options and you will have radically different cars that will increase the spectators pleasure.

If this is right..... UH WTF?!?!

Not only are they going to kick out all the manufacturer teams, there going to use someone WITHOUT current experience of building and running F1 engines... and expect them to supply the whole grid!

It will end up being a specialised engine manufacturer then, not a car maker...

The whole idea is just stupid. Only Mad Max could have came up with it by himself.

Standard chassis parts is equally just as stupid IMO.

F1 needs to go back to its roots where all of a sudden a new team turns up with a kick ass new design which destroys the competition and then everyone copies it.

Deregulation deregulation deregulation. Great for motor racing. Not so good if your name is Gordon Brown overseeing the financial sector ;)

I'm surprised Ferrari, of all teams, has made this statement but applaud them for it !

All the innovative ways of being faster have been banned in recent years, and If you try to copy someone, you get kicked out.

F1 should have an open book policy. You are allowed to come up with inventions and innovations, but the moment you put any technology on track competitively (at a race weekend) then all the plans must be made public... :)

Open source motor racing. Hah :) That is quite a good idea actually...
