RNLI lifeboat charges

I couldn't hate this country and government any more if I tried.

Bring on V....

One thing is true of all governments - their most reliable records are tax records

Fantastic movie - with quite a few home truths imo ;)

Why does the government not run the RNLI?

Because they are much more efficient and better run as charities than the state could ever manage?

A sad but true reflection of these modern times.

I've done charity work before for the RNLI, a very worthy cause - funded purely by charity and manned by many brave souls - petition signed for what its worth :(

it's not at all shocking..

RNLI are one of the few charities that are litrally swamped with money... sure they do a good job but even so, there is a lot of very well paid jobs in that 'company'

You only have to see the facilities they have down at pool quay, it's enough to make every other company in the area look small fry..

Wonder how much fat cat boss's of this so called charity get paid ?, i bet it would make you think again next time someone jangles a tin under your nose pleading poverty.

It's a dangerous thing indeed when a charity gets so big and so rich it's run like a business...

Remember how Greenpeace got so big that they were actually scared to risk assets in things that greenpeace should be doing for fear of court cases etc... not that I like greenpeace, they are a bunch of lentil eating layabouts who do nothing except annoy everyone else trying to get on with life.

250k is nothing to them, and I mean nothing... small change.

It is money that could be better spent elsewhere though. The latest accounts (for 2005) have them raising 102m but spending 120m. A net loss for the year of 17.8m. Thankfully they have enough reserves to cover that loss (460m in fact, but a lot of that they are unable to access quickly or easily).

I don't usually sign these things as I'm dubious as to their effectiveness but I've signed this one.

Having been born and brought up in a fishing town, I know what a vital job the RNLI do - they have saved hundreds of lives back home in Shetland alone. There are a great many hard-working and dedicated volunteers who raise funds for them. The money these people raise is raised to help save the lives of seafarers around the country, not to line OFCOM's pockets.

Please sign the petition. Hopefully someone will take notice and the money can be used to save lives at it was intended and not to pay more stealth taxes.

im sure they get 1001 'cash breaks' from goverment as it is...

signing something for 250k when the company has 460m in reserve is a waste of internet bandwidth ;)

How dare a hard working life saving charity be successful! I wouldnt want those corporate fat cats saving me when I was slowly drowning. No, screw them and their ability to afford the latest technology, to keep their boats well maintained and crews well trained!

Let's make the scum pay!!!

PK!

Signed.

Didnt realise they had to pay, thats pretty sickening. Having done a fair bit of offshore sailing, and once getting stuck in a F8-9 off scotland which nearly ended quite badly, I very much appreciate the work they do

the question should be, should a charity have 460m in the bank.... i dont think so.

You do realise that they don't actually have £460m sitting in a bank account don't you? That it will in fact be invested in such a way to provide a solid income to support the running of the service? So that when years go buy where donations don't match costs (such as 2005) they can draw on those reserves?

edit: unless they save from bath drownings i shouldn't need them

Why shouldn't a charity have £460m in the bank? It would seem to me to be quite prudent in protecting themselves against a shortfall in income (i.e. donations). Many businesses could learn a thing or two from them.

Signed the petition. But everyone ranting and raving at the government and Ofcom - why? They're not picking out the RNLI and saying "You have to pay this!" - it is just a tariff increase, that the RNLI is subject too like everyone else.

However, always being a strong believer that they do the job that the government should be funding anyway, I signed. I fee waiver would be fair.

When their business requires large expenditure on a semi-regular basis (eg new lifeboats, new/modified lifeboat sheds etc), then yes they should, especially as it means they haven't been relying on cheap credit over the last few years.

A single Tamar class lifeboat (the most recently launched) costs £2million to buy, that's without running costs, equipment or somewhere to launch it (the tamar class also requires modifications to the launch slip compared to the Tyne class).

They are entirely honest about their accounts

And the percentage of their income used for stated purposes is higher than charities such as Oxfam or greenpeace.

Your ire and anger is entirely misplaced and illinformed.
